Deputy Fire Marshal II (Current IFD employees only)

Indianapolis Fire Department provides emergency and fire protection services for the City of Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Firefighters are trained as paramedics, emergency medical technicians, extrication specialists, top water and rescue divers, confined space and trench rescue specialists, and hazardous materials technicians to save lives, protect property, and the environment.

About the role

This position is responsible for completing annual fire and life safety inspections of all building types throughout the IFD district. The incumbent identifies fire hazards, inspects fire-related equipment, provides fire and life safety training, and conducts educational classes for children and adults. The role includes after-hours code enforcement, victim assistance, and responding to serious fires. Independent judgment based on experience and training may be required.

Reports to the Captain, Assistant Fire Marshal.

Responsibilities

• Enforce building and fire codes.
• Conduct pre- and final inspections of new construction or building renovations.
• Issue violations and seek redress through the court for non-compliance.
• Perform fire protection acceptance testing.
• Respond to complaints from constituents or firefighters.
• Provide fire protection systems training to firefighters.
• Deliver specialty training for high-risk occupancy buildings.
• Educate building owners and property management teams on fire prevention measures, fire protection systems, and building code guidelines.
• Serve as a liaison with the board of health, code enforcement, DPW, prosecutors, state fire marshal, OSHA, and community action groups.
• Teach and effectively communicate fire prevention, injury prevention, and life safety to target audiences.
• Develop, maintain, and deliver ongoing educational programs.
• Facilitate and participate in public events to maintain fire prevention regulations and public safety.
• Assist in fire prevention education through community outreach events.
• Operate and maintain educational props and equipment, including wearing firefighter gear as needed.
• Maintain broad knowledge of Survive Alive, firefighter gear, data, activities, and community risk reduction initiatives.
• Develop and improve educational programs, including the car seat inspection program.
• Train in smoke alarm installation.
• Create and maintain project documentation through spreadsheets, diagrams, process maps, and other documents.
• Prepare and manage smoke alarm installation events and IFD apparatus scheduling for community events.
• Maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent with five (5) years of related work experience.
• Knowledge of department rules and regulations, fire prevention, pre-planning, and inspections.
• Ability to interact with a wide variety of government and private sector agencies.
• Strong customer service orientation and organizational skills.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office products preferred.
• Must pass state certification of Inspector I or II within 12 months of hire.
• Maintain working knowledge of state, local, and NFPA codes.
• Must acquire state certification for public fire and life safety educator within two (2) years of holding the position.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, work under stress, and exercise professional judgment.
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate degree in Fire Science, Building Inspections, Architecture, or a related field with three (3) years of related work experience.
• Mathematical skills and ability to understand blueprint specifications and diagrams.
• Pass state certification of Inspector I or II within 24 months of hire.
• Pass state certification of Public Educator I and II within 12 months of hire.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Working Conditions

Essential functions of the Deputy Fire Marshal are regularly performed in the field with exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Public Educator duties are typically performed in an office setting. Special events and outreach activities may occur at various locations and in the field as needed.
