Deputy Division Leader (R&D Manager 5)

About the Role

The Analytics, Intelligence and Technology Division (A-Division) is seeking a Deputy Division Leader (DDL) to help lead an organization of approximately 250 staff and students. The DDL will partner closely with the Division Leader to shape and execute the Division's strategy, strengthen its technical capabilities, deliver on mission commitments, and develop the people and infrastructure needed for future national security challenges. The DDL will serve as a member of the A-Division and Global Security leadership teams and will help set direction across a diverse portfolio of science, engineering, and operational activities.

A-Division's core competencies include nuclear threat assessment and proliferation analysis; nuclear explosive defeat technologies; modeling and simulation of threats to critical infrastructure; data analytics and cyber threat characterization; sensor design and electromagnetic environment dominance; nuclear material and proliferation pathway analysis; and reverse engineering and rapid prototyping.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the Division Leader to translate the Division's vision, strategy, priorities, and tactical plans.
• Integrate people, capabilities, facilities, and programs to deliver current commitments while positioning the Division for future mission needs.
• Build on a culture of safety, quality, and mission assurance practices across the Division's programs, facilities, and operations.
• Oversee high-hazard and high-security activities, including work involving nuclear materials, consistent with LANL requirements and Safe Conduct of Research principles.
• Ensure that operational risks are understood, appropriate controls are established, and work is conducted within approved requirements and authorization boundaries.
• Establish trust with customers and partners, deliver on commitments, and communicate risks and decisions clearly.
• Build productive relationships across the Laboratory and with program sponsors and national security partners.
• Recruit, develop, mentor, and retain exceptional technical and operational talent needed to sustain and grow the Division's capabilities.
• Foster accountability, collaboration, professional growth, and an inclusive working environment.
• Address complex and difficult issues and resolve conflict professionally and constructively.

Requirements

Qualifications

This position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and at least 12 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position. A degree in Science or Engineering preferred.

Desired Qualifications

• Knowledge of A-Division's technical and research portfolio and how it supports LANL's national security mission.
• Research and development experience within the compliance framework of a Hazard Category 2 nuclear facility.
• Knowledge of external funding organizations, including the National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of State.
• Significant experience engaging with programmatic sponsors and developing program strategy.
• An advanced degree in a relevant technical discipline.
• Active involvement in one or more professional associations relevant to A-Division's science and technology portfolio.
• An active Department of Energy Q clearance and the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information access.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance

This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
