Deputy Detention Facility Superintendent (DL) - Kapolei/Honolulu, Oahu
Summary of Duties
Affords assistance to the Detention Facility Superintendent in directing and supervising various support and operational functions of the facility. Oversees and coordinates daily custody and care activities within a detention facility for juveniles; oversees operational support services to complement detainee supervision. Assumes responsibility in the absence of the Detention Facility Superintendent and is subject to call in emergency situations during weekends, holidays, and after work hours.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education Requirement: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably with a major in a behavioral or social science. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
General Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of experience in providing direct services to children and youth, involving knowledge and application in dealing with youth behavior and attitudes, counseling and guidance, casework or groupwork techniques, or rehabilitative techniques.
Specialized Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional counseling or other social services work experience in a criminal justice system, demonstrating knowledge of the philosophy, principles, concepts, and practices relating to the criminal justice system, rehabilitation, or institutional programs, including program development and evaluation or development of new and revised procedures.
Supervisory Aptitude
For the class, Deputy Detention Facility Superintendent, supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience is accepted. This includes successful completion of regular or special assignments involving supervisory responsibilities, serving as a group or team leader, completing training courses in supervision, and receiving favorable appraisals indicating supervisory potential.
Allowable Substitutions
Master's degree from an accredited university with specialization in sociology, psychology, criminology, penology, social work, or related behavioral science may be substituted for two (2) years of General Experience.
Ph.D. degree from an accredited university with specialization in sociology, psychology, criminology, penology, social work, or related behavioral science may be substituted for two (2) years of General Experience and one (1) year of the Specialized Experience.
Testing Information
All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be required to pass an Attitudinal Test to be eligible for employment consideration. The Attitudinal Test will be administered in Honolulu, Oahu only. Candidates must report for the exam in person. The Attitudinal Test is not available online or administered out-of-state. Only applicants who pass the Attitudinal Test will be eligible for employment consideration.
Selective Certification Requirement - Driver's License
This position requires a valid and unexpired driver's license to operate a motor vehicle. Applicants must possess a current and valid driver's license to be considered for this position.
Education

Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement
In accordance with the PREA Federal law, the Hawaii State Judiciary shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with detainees in juvenile facilities and lockups, with inmates detained in a prison or jail, or with residents of community confinement facilities who: Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution; Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in b above; or Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment, or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
