About the role

The Deputy Coroner responds to calls concerning violent deaths, performs routine examinations of the body, talks to witnesses, and files various reports.

Responsibilities

  • Performs independent investigations into all violent, suspicious, sudden/unexpected and reportable natural deaths.
  • Determines if the case should be considered criminal based on autopsy reports.
  • Performs examinations of all deceased individuals; draws fluids as needed for analysis purposes; and determines when autopsies are warranted.
  • Speaks with witnesses concerning the death to gather further insight in determining the cause of death.
  • Completes the Coroner Scene Report.
  • Completes all other necessary paperwork and forwards for proper distribution and filing.
  • Determines when the body should be removed from the scene.
  • Attends autopsies when necessary.
  • Counsels investigations that ensure positive identification of deceased.
  • Testifies in criminal and civil courts.
  • Makes notification to next of kin.
  • Generates reports that relate to deaths investigated by the office, as well as other paperwork relating to cases.
  • Interacts with emergency and medical personnel, fire personnel, law enforcement, families, social services, funeral homes, insurance companies and attorneys.
  • Receives and evaluates subpoenas necessary records as warranted for investigative purposes.
  • Issues burial transit permits.
  • Rotates on call shift.

Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent by the State Dept. of Education.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and a resident of Florence County.
  • Must possess a valid S.C. driver’s license.
  • Medical and/or law enforcement experience with a background in forensics, crime scene and death investigation is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently required to perform basic physical activities and communicate effectively to carry out essential job duties.
  • Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 50 lb. objects regularly.
  • Correctable vision sufficient to read monitors, labels, and drive safely.
