Deputy Coroner

About the role

This position directly supports the Coroner and Chief Deputy Coroner by serving as a primary death investigator for the office, providing cremation authorizations, and performing other duties as assigned. This is a per-call position with no current on-call requirements; the Deputy Coroner is called on an as-needed basis. Hired individuals will receive training for death investigations.

Responsibilities

• Triage and screen death notifications from hospitals, hospice agencies, nursing homes, and other facilities to determine jurisdiction requirements.
• Respond to death scenes and investigate both natural and non-natural deaths.
• Photograph the scene and decedent, conduct body examinations, and interview witnesses and family.
• Review medical records and collaborate with law enforcement, funeral directors, and medical providers.
• Determine cause and manner of death and complete comprehensive case reports of all investigative findings.

Requirements

• Five years minimum experience in a medical-related field (e.g., Nursing, Paramedic, or Physician’s Assistant). Other combinations of education and experience that provide equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
• Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and a driving record that meets county standards.
