Position Information

The Kinesiology Department in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, the University of Texas at Arlington, invites applications for a tenured department Chair position. The Chair of the Department of Kinesiology is appointed by the Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation (CONHI) and is accountable to the Dean. The roles and functions of the Chair, Department of Kinesiology include provision of leadership in the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the Department of Kinesiology and collaboration with other departments in the advancement of college priorities.

The Chair is responsible for the leadership and guidance to all Kinesiology faculty by designing and executing a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that department operations are effective and efficient, department assets are safeguarded, department financial information is reliable, and the department complies with college and university policies as well as applicable laws and regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administration & Operations: Provides leadership and strategic oversight to the department of Kinesiology.
  • Recruits and retains qualified faculty for all programs; onboards, orients and mentors new faculty.
  • Serves on various internal and external committees.
  • Continually assesses the effectiveness of programs and operations through feedback, surveys, and other tools.
  • Develops annual budget.
  • Captures and manages the Unit Effectiveness Process (UEP).
  • Engages, as a member of the faculty, in teaching, scholarly activity, professional development, service and institution building, consistent with the University’s mission and with a focus on strategic priorities.

Required Qualifications

  • TenuredPh.D. or equivalent degree in disciplines or fields of study within the Department of Kinesiology.
  • 3-5 years leadership experience in higher education.

  • Broad knowledge of campus processes, protocols, and procedures with a focus on teaching, instruction, and administration.
  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options and recommendations for resolution.
  • Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence/persuade all levels of faculty and staff.

Department Information

The College of Nursing and Health Innovation (CONHI) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) is the largest not-for-profit college of nursing, with online and in-person students. The College is committed to the University’s goal of enhancing academic and research excellence, promoting access to education, student success. The College has 500+ full time and part time faculty and has received 3 National League of Nursing Center of Excellence designations, including a new designation in category “Advancing the Science of Nursing Education”. CONHI has accomplished a tremendous expansion of its profile as a research enterprise. For FY 2022, the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research ranked CONHI #32 in receipt of NIH funding among Schools of Nursing. In FY 2021/2022, CONHI had active research awards totaling nearly $47.1 Million, including multi-year funding, and over forty active research faculty members. The College has ongoing translational research that includes basic sciences, clinical, applied and community studies in areas such as aging, cardiovascular, cardio-oncology, mental health, women’s health, skeletal muscle, patient safety, rural health, health disparities and vulnerable populations. The Department of Kinesiology houses undergraduate and graduate programs in movement and rehabilitation science, integrative & applied physiology, physical education, public health, and athletic training to over 1,700 majors. Among the many undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department, this open faculty position is most related to the BS and MS degrees in Exercise Science and the nationally ranked PhD degree in Kinesiology. Faculty in the Department of Kinesiology are funded by a wide range of agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Science Foundation, the American Heart Association, Health Resources and Services Administration, and many others. The University of Texas at Arlington and the Department of Kinesiology offer all faculty members access to state-of-the-art research facilities. In addition, the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is a hot-bed for biomedical and health-related research; the Department of Kinesiology and College of Nursing and Health Innovation have existing collaborations with regional, national, and internationally recognized institutions. Our faculty’s vast teaching experience, research expertise, and dedication to service provide rich learning experiences across the department’s academic programs. Collaboration with colleagues in colleges/schools including the College of Education, College of Engineering, and The School of Social Work are common. We foster and support multidisciplinary research and education. Being an integral part of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation gives the Department the unique opportunity to have an integral role in advancing the University in its mission and the goals laid out in UT Arlington’s strategic plan: UTA Strategic Plan.
