Responsibilities

  • Safely operate company vehicles to transport and pick up building materials product at designated locations.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure safety and report any issues.
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized vehicle interior.
  • Use (POD) proof of delivery to take pictures of the job site prior to making a delivery.
  • Take pictures of the product which has been delivered by the driver.
  • Take pictures of the location should there be a need to make the delivery on pavement.
  • If the area looks questionable, a customer waiver consent form is required.
  • Communicate and work effectively with customers, dispatchers, management, and other employees.
  • Generate an advance communication in the form of a text or phone call from the driver to the customer regarding the product delivery.
  • Follow delivery routes and schedules accurately and promptly.
  • Load product onto the truck for the specific deliveries designated within a route.
  • The driver could have multiple trips from the branch depending on the specific routes for the day.
  • Complete necessary paperwork and maintain accurate trip records.
  • Respond to emergencies or unexpected situations calmly and efficiently, which could include contacting the department manager.
  • Safely drive the delivery vehicle to the customer jobsite.
  • Unload product at the jobsite, in most circumstances, unassisted.
  • Ensure that the product is protected from any inclement weather.
  • Depending upon the department’s needs, the driver may be required to stay beyond their scheduled time to help pull orders for delivery for the following day.
  • Read work orders / invoices to determine product needs for customer pick-up or delivery.
  • Frequently lift and carry building materials product by hand weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Operate a forklift to load a customer’s vehicle, load an Erie Materials delivery truck, unload a vendor truck, move product in stock, etc.
  • Work in the warehouse, as needed, to put away returns, stock bays, clean warehouse areas, and help walk-in customers by providing them with their recently purchased product.
  • Appropriately receive and check in product.
  • Perform additional responsibilities, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Valid New York State Commercial Class B driver license with a clean driving record.
  • Minimum of 1 year of professional driving experience is preferred.
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of building materials product is preferred.
  • Forklift and/or Moffett experience are preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of and adherence to traffic laws and road safety regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and operate GPS and other navigation tools.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry building materials product by hand weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical and DOT drug screening.
  • Ability to meet FMCSA Vision requirements which include having at least 20/40 vision in each eye (with or without correction), a 70-degree field of vision, and the ability to recognize red, green, and amber traffic lights.
  • Ability to meet FMCSA Hearing requirements which include having the ability to first perceive a forced whispered voice in the better ear at not less than five feet with or without the use of a hearing aid or if tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500Hz, 1000HZ and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to the American National Standard Z24.5-1951.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Strong basic math skills which include the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
  • Have a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement or must obtain it within the first 3 months of employment if hired without it.
  • Have an Air Brakes endorsement.
