DELI/SERVICE CLERK

Responsibilities

• Assist the department manager in reaching sales and profit goals and monitor quality assurance standards.
• Create a welcoming environment where customers feel important and appreciated by answering product questions.
• Gain and maintain knowledge of department products to respond to inquiries and make suggestions.
• Slice deli meats and cheeses to customer requests using proper deli equipment.
• Offer samples and recommend products to customers.
• Inform customers of deli/bistro specials and recommend items to meet their needs.
• Use all department equipment according to company guidelines.
• Check product freshness, review “sell by” dates, and take appropriate action.
• Label, stock, sign, and inventory department merchandise.
• Report product ordering or shipping discrepancies to the department manager.
• Stay current with present, future, seasonal, and special advertisements.
• Adhere to all local, state, and federal health and civil code regulations.
• Comply with state, county, and local weights and measures laws and labeling requirements.
• Observe scheduled shift operating hours.
• Maintain a clean, attractive, and friendly department; keep refrigerated coolers, shelves, and displays fully stocked and conditioned.
• Prepare salads, entrées, and meals; assemble party trays to company standards.
• Perform cashier functions.
• Ensure compliance with merchandising, customer service, cash control, labor control, expense and supply controls, loss prevention, maintenance, safety, food safety, associate and customer engagement rules.
• Maintain proper temperatures in cases and coolers and keep temperature logs.
• Reinforce safety programs by complying with safety procedures, identifying unsafe conditions, and notifying store management.
• Practice preventive maintenance by inspecting equipment and reporting items needing repair.
• Notify management of customer or employee accidents.
• Report safety risks, issues, or illegal activity including robbery, theft, or fraud.
• Perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

• Ability to handle stressful situations.
• Effective communication skills.
• Knowledge of basic math: counting, addition, and subtraction.
• Current food handlers permit (once employed).
• Ability to meet the minimum physical demands of the position.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (desired).
• Retail experience (desired).
• Second language: speaking, reading, and/or writing (desired).
