Deckhand

Responsibilities

  • Aid others in preparing barges for cargo loading and unloading.
  • Build tows by tying and untangling barges and boats using cables and lines.
  • Assemble deck lines and handle lines and rigging during tow building, locking, and docking activities.
  • Perform scheduled preventative vessel maintenance, including cleaning, scraping, painting, and changing oil and filters.
  • Inspect, correct if possible, and report any conditions affecting the safety of the boat to the Captain.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties.
  • Perform simple repairs and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Measure the draft of a barge using a tape measure to ensure proper loading.
  • Be familiar with engine room piping, wiring, and valves.
  • Be willing to work overtime and flexible work schedules.
  • Communicate effectively using the radio, speaker, or electronic communication.
  • Work outdoors and in varying or extreme weather conditions.
  • Work in high and precarious places or cramped spaces requiring awkward positions.
  • Stand, walk, sit, grip, climb, reach, shovel, squat, crawl, or lift up to 45 pounds.

Skills

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Merchant Marine Document (Z-Card) preferred.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Minimum of 6 months of proven proficiency aboard inner harbor and/or inland waterway tugs.
  • Comprehend essential information related to spill containment and cleanup, MSDS sheets, and emergency action information.
  • Ensure safe, working conditions and orderliness of the vessel.
  • Follow all company safety rules and environmental regulations.
  • Wear safety equipment as required.
  • Read, write, and communicate using the English language.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with engine room piping, wiring, and valves.
  • Ability to work in high and precarious places or cramped spaces requiring awkward positions.
  • Standing, walking, sitting, twisting, squatting, kneeling, stooping, reaching, gripping, and fingering for extended periods.
  • Extensive flexibility, balance, coordination, and dexterity.
