Deckhand.

Duties

• Secure floating plant with manila and synthetic lines, cables, wire straps, rachets, etc.
• Perform housekeeping and maintenance tasks such as washing down decks, chip-ping paint and rust from bulkheads, timber heads, cavels, deck equipment, and painting.
• Greasening moving deck equipment such as capstans, tow winch, or electric cranes to ensure working condition.
• Assisting other craftsmen with maintenance and repairs.

Requirements

• Conditions of employment: Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Successfully complete and pass pre-employment physical.
• Successfully complete and pass pre-employment drug screen, and inclusion in the randomized drug testing program.
• Work in inclement weather conditions.
• Position is designated as Non-Sensitive-No access is required.
• Work may require moderately heavy lifting and physical effort in moving drums in excess of 50 pounds.

• Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations.
• Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Deckhand without more than normal supervision. Conducting channel patrol activities, outboard motor operation, deck equipment repair, general maintenance and housekeeping on a floating plant.

Physical Efforts

• Work requires substantial physical effort when handling heavy cables, equipment, and machinery; while making and breaking tows; and when washing, scrubbing, cleaning, chipping, and painting surfaces.
• Heavy lifting up to 40 pounds may be required.
• Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and crouching and walking.

Working Conditions

• Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes in heat and cold and heavy rainfall.
• Workers are exposed to paint fumes, and are subject to cuts and bruises while working with equipment.
• There is the possibility of eye injury while chipping paint and rust.
• There is a danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning.
• On-shore work may involve working in mud, and dirty or cramped situations.
