Deckhand

About the role

Deckhands safely and efficiently provide general labor on tug or supply vessels. Responsibilities include maintenance, housekeeping, simple repairs, securing the vessel to docks and barges, assisting with loading/unloading personnel, supplies, and equipment, and performing radio, engine, line, and fire watch. Deckhands work under the supervision of the Captain.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily cooking, cleaning, and sanitation of the vessel from the wheelhouse to the galley, and scrub the exterior weekly.
• Notify the Captain when supplies and consumables are depleted to ensure adequate stock.
• Maintain the proper functioning, cleanliness, and upkeep of all deck equipment and cabin appliances.
• Store, secure, and tie down cargo that has shifted or become unsecured during transport.
• Pull, hook, and tie ropes to and from offshore rigs, vessels, or structures to ensure vessel stability during loading/unloading.
• Connect/disconnect and manually pull and secure hoses, ropes, and cables to offshore rigs and supply vessels.
• Load and store supplies and groceries onto the vessel.
• Chip, scrape, grind, and paint the interior and exterior of the vessel using small grinders, paint brushes, and step ladders.
• Wash, scrub, clean, and mop the deck; replace deck boards and wipe up spills.
• Ensure all passengers wear life jackets and assist them on and off the vessel safely.
• Rotate with crew members to maintain proper deck, engine, and radio watches.

Requirements

• Experience in Tugboat, Oilfield, Heavy Equipment, Operations, and/or Shipyard is preferred.
• TWIC Card certification required.
