About the role
Employment relationships with STEVENS TOWING COMPANY, INC. are of an "at-will" nature, allowing either party to terminate the relationship at any time.
Responsibilities
- Understand and comprehend duties and responsibilities given by the Captain/Mate.
- Able to understand required deckhand skills and maintenance responsibilities.
- Keep non-engineering areas of the vessel in good condition; clean inside and outside of the boat, scrub and wash floors, wash windows, polish brass equipment, wash and paint exterior decks and bulkheads.
- Cook meals and keep the galley clean.
- Familiarize and understand barges in a tow.
- Handle tug's working lines and mooring lines, and towing gear including hawsers, cables, bridles, shock lines, and retrieve lines as needed.
- Maintain and operate deck equipment during docking or departure.
- Secure and prepare the vessel for sea as soon as possible after leaving the dock.
- Check masthead, stern and sidelights and report to the Captain/Mate at sunset, also check the anchor light when used.
- Adjust protective fenders when the boat is landing, take them in upon departure and adjust them as necessary.
- Sweep and mop the interior of the vessel, wipe the bulkheads and overhead daily after each trip.
- Wash dishes, pots, pans and cutlery after each meal and return them to their proper location.
- Clean the stove and oven once a week, clean and/or defrost the refrigerator weekly and the freezer monthly.
- Arrange food supplies to prevent damage at sea.
- Scrub toilet heads daily and shower stall and shower rack once a week.
- Empty trash and garbage daily, clean ashtrays, and sweep the vessel daily.
- Assist the engineer as required and expect to be helped in return when needed.
- Splice and care for all lines as instructed by the Captain.
- Apply for a Merchant Mariners Document from the United States Coast Guard and provide copies of all subsequent endorsements and/or licenses to Stevens.
- Check life preservers to ensure they are properly stowed and not used as pillows.
- Be physically capable of lifting, carrying, and working with heavy rigging.
- Perform duties under adverse conditions over or near water, and under tight time schedules.
Qualifications
- Experience in understanding and comprehending duties and responsibilities.
- Experience in scrubbing down the boat after each trip.
- Experience in securing and preparing the vessel for sea as soon as possible after leaving the dock.
- Experience in checking and maintaining masthead, stern and sidelights and reporting to the Captain/Mate at sunset.
- Experience in adjusting protective fenders when the boat is landing, taking them in upon departure and adjusting them as necessary.
- Experience in sweeping and mopping the interior of the vessel, wiping the bulkheads and overhead daily after each trip.
- Experience in washing dishes, pots, pans and cutlery after each meal and returning them to their proper location.
- Experience in cleaning the stove and oven once a week, cleaning and/or defrosting the refrigerator weekly and the freezer monthly.
- Experience in arranging food supplies to prevent damage at sea.
- Experience in scrubbing toilet heads daily and shower stall and shower rack once a week.
- Experience in emptying trash and garbage daily, cleaning ashtrays, and sweeping the vessel daily.
- Experience in assisting the engineer as required and expecting to be helped in return when needed.
- Experience in splicing and caring for all lines as instructed by the Captain.
- Experience in applying for a Merchant Mariners Document from the United States Coast Guard and providing copies of all subsequent endorsements and/or licenses to Stevens.
- Experience in checking life preservers to ensure they are properly stowed and not used as pillows.
- Physical capability to lift, carry, and work with heavy rigging.
