Job Summary

About the role

This position involves building tows using cables and lines to assist in preparing, loading, transporting, and discharging aggregate barges. The role also includes assisting coworkers with handling and assembling deck lines, rigging during tow building, and performing daily inspections and maintenance to ensure safe working conditions.

Responsibilities

• Take an active role in prioritizing safety in accordance with MSHA and Vulcan standards.
• Build tows using cables and lines to assist others in preparing barges for loading, transporting, and discharging aggregate barges.
• Assist coworkers with handling and assembling deck lines, rigging during tow building, and locking and docking activities.
• Perform daily inspections and maintenance of the interior and exterior of the vessel to ensure safe working conditions.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, including cleaning, scraping, painting, and changing all oil and filters throughout the vessel.
• Handle lines and rigging during tow building, locking and docking activities.
• Inspect, correct if possible, and notify the Captain of any conditions affecting the safety of the tow or tug.
• Care for tools and equipment.
• Absorb provisions such as fuel, water, groceries, and other supplies as needed.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED or equivalent combination of training and work experience.
• Valid Merchant Marine Document (Z-Card) preferred.
• Previous experience as deck hand preferred, but not required.
• Willingness to work overtime and consecutive days straight on a rotation watch schedule while on board.
• Ability to work outside in all types of weather conditions while wearing protective equipment, including foul weather gear, life jacket, gloves, and boots.
• Knowledge of general principles and practices regarding marine safety and operations.
• Some knowledge of industrial tools, their uses, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of United States Coast Guard and Environmental regulations.
• Comprehend essential information related to: spill containment and cleanup, MSDS sheets and emergency action information, safety meeting.
• Valid Driver’s License preferred.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate must be able to perform all duties while wearing protective equipment to include foul weather gear, life jacket, gloves and boots. Must be able to work on a water vessel and travel multiple days in a row with rotating work shifts.
