Dean of Nursing

About the role
As a member of the College’s leadership team, the Dean of Nursing collaborates closely with the Executive Director of Academic Operations and the rest of the campus leadership team on policy making, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the campus’s activities. The Dean ensures that the College’s vision, mission, and values are foundational elements in guiding decision-making and actions.
Responsibilities
- Administrative and Leadership
- Monitor and evaluate direct reports, including nursing faculty, clinical coordinator, and director of simulation.
- Ensure compliance of the nursing program with State Board of Nursing (BON) requirements.
- Prepare and complete annual and required reports and data for the Board; notify the Board of any substantial changes as outlined by state BON rules and regulations.
- Represent the nursing program at meetings of appropriate bodies, including the Board of Nursing.
- Submit information for preparation of the annual operating and capital budget.
- Provide leadership to faculty in preparation for accreditation self-study.
- Prepare and maintain statistics related to program outcomes.
- Maintain records relevant to the program.
- Manage direct reports, including conducting 1:1s, quarterly check-ins, performance management, and offering training and development.
- General Operations
- Promptly notify direct manager and appropriate corporate stakeholders of all legal issues.
- Notify manager of any personnel changes at the management level.
- Provide positive leadership to build employee morale.
- Clinical Scheduling/Clinical Consortium
- Supervise the Assistant Dean of Nursing when student threshold is met.
- Supervise, directly or indirectly, the Clinical Coordinator and ensure clinical coordination aligns with clinical scheduling practices, state consortium, and Board of Nursing.
- Collaborate with the clinical coordinator, faculty, and facilities to evaluate the appropriateness of clinical facilities and curricular experiences.
- Ensure a sufficient supply of direct patient care hours necessary to deliver the nursing curriculum.
- Monitor students’ compliance with health regulations in partnership with the Clinical Coordinator; serve as liaison to the Board of Health as needed.
- Faculty
- Oversee the appointment, retention, and promotion of faculty, including general education faculty in the absence of an Executive Director of Academic Operations or Dean of General Education.
- Manage the hiring process, including interviews, teaching presentations, and reference checks.
- Coordinate the orientation and onboarding process for faculty (adjunct and full-time), including computer/IT training and Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) training.
- Guide faculty on academic issues in the development of ATI methodologies for classroom instruction.
- Develop faculty workload schedules, ensuring office hours, committee service, and full-time faculty are scheduled for 36 credit hours annually based on the fiscal year.
- Assign adjunct clinical faculty directly or indirectly.
- Ensure each nursing student has a faculty advisor.
- Work with faculty to ensure appropriate delivery of content/concepts and sequencing based on student performance on standardized exams.
- Resolve conflicts effectively.
- Provide faculty development and mentoring resources to drive program outcomes and grow faculty.
- Students
- Prepare and manage the Core Nursing Orientation for Level 5 students.
- Provide advisement for students and resolve student problems.
- Coordinate activities related to student admission, retention, progression, and graduation.
- Work with the Executive Director of Academic Operations and Dean of General Education to align all areas of the student experience with outcomes and the mission to achieve the highest levels of student achievement and satisfaction.
- Curriculum
- Serve as liaison to ATI for scheduling live reviews and services.
- Work with ATI and faculty to assess course outcomes and teaching strategies using ATI data.
- Facilitate the textbook and media selection process.
- Work with the BSN Program Manager to ensure timely textbook ordering and distribution to students.
- Review and address findings from end-of-course evaluations.
- Collaborate with the Dean of General Education (DOGE) to align liberal arts and nursing curricula, facilitate joint in-service offerings, hold regular joint meetings, and provide updates for each department at least quarterly.
- Recommend the purchase of supplies and equipment for the nursing program.
- Collaborate with the Nursing Lab Manager to ensure labs are properly maintained and meet standards for equipment.
- Committee Service
- Chair monthly meetings of the nursing faculty and, in the absence of a DOGE, chair all general education faculty meetings.
- Serve as an ex-officio member of all nursing program committees.
- Serve on the following committees:
- BSN Curriculum Committee
- Community Advisory Council
- Academic Affairs Committee
- Systematic Evaluation Plan (SEP) Committee
- Other Duties as Assigned
Perform additional duties as required to support the successful operation of the nursing program.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Nursing; doctorate preferred. Doctorate required in states where the BON requires a doctorally-prepared program administrator.
- Five years’ combined teaching experience and experience in curriculum development and administration.
- Current unencumbered state professional registered nurse license or enhanced compact nurse licensure relevant to the state of teaching location (subject to state BON/BRN regulation where the student is located).
