Deaf Mentor, USDB

About the role

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) is seeking two Deaf Mentor positions in Northern Utah and St. George. Key responsibilities include providing home-based services in American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture, preparing lesson plans, performing weekly home visits, and helping families access deaf community activities.

Responsibilities

• Provide home-based services to families with deaf/hard-of-hearing children, age birth to three years, in the areas of American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture.
• Prepare and write lesson plans.
• Perform weekly home visits to children and families, following the curriculum provided, and model activities for parents.
• Help families access deaf community activities and events.
• Apply bilingual, bicultural teaching methods to deaf/hard-of-hearing children.

Qualifications

• Must be deaf.
• Must have advanced American Sign Language (ASL) skills.
• Must have knowledge of Deaf culture.
• Must be well-versed in language acquisition, principles of ASL best practices, and have a specialization in teaching adults the principles of ASL and Deaf culture.
• Must communicate clearly and effectively.
• Must maintain strict confidentiality.

Supplemental Information

• Travel is required.
• Must be willing to work a schedule that meets the needs of the families being served, including evenings and Saturdays, and be willing to participate in multiple Deaf culture events throughout the year.
• Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
• Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc.
• Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
• Preference may be given to applicants with a degree in Early Childhood Education and/or experience working with deaf/hard-of-hearing children.
• Work schedule typically Monday through Friday, seven-and-one-half (7-1/2) hours per day, 183 days per school year.

Location – Northern Utah and St. George. Background Check Required – You must successfully pass a criminal history check. Drug Test Required – No.
