About the role
The main function of a Data Center Technician is to monitor software to process business, scientific, engineering, and other data according to operating instructions. This role involves preparing, staging, setting up, and performing startups and shutdowns of datacenter hardware such as racks, hard drives, and switches.
Responsibilities
- Monitor the system for equipment failure or errors in performance.
- Respond to program error messages by finding and correcting problems or terminating the program.
- Prepare, stage, set up, and perform startups and shutdowns of hardware according to specific instructions.
- Perform post-execution quality checks and verify that grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling are set up properly.
- Perform diagnostics and troubleshooting to identify the cause of issues and replace faulty components.
- Decommission hardware for simple changes and refreshes, such as memory upgrades or OS rebuilds.
- Follow procedures to communicate, report, and escalate incidents to appropriate personnel.
- Operate spreadsheet programs and other software to load and manipulate data and to produce reports.
Qualifications
A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required. An Associate's degree in computer programming or equivalent training is also a requirement. 2-4 years of experience are required, including at least one year of experience supporting IT equipment or related technology.
Skills
A basic knowledge of computer hardware, servers, and components is necessary. A basic understanding of how to use Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word) is also required. Verbal and written communication skills, problem-solving skills, and customer service and interpersonal skills are required. The candidate must have a basic ability to work independently and manage their time. Flexibility to work non-standard business hours, which may include weekends and/or holidays, is required.
