About the Role
Day Shift Electrical Technician responsible for hands-on electrical, electronic, and controls troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance on production and general plant equipment. Work alongside the shift maintenance crew to keep the lines running in a food manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform hands-on electrical, electronic, and controls troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance on production and general plant equipment.
- Diagnose and repair industrial electrical and electronic systems, motor controls, instrumentation, and industrial automation directly on the production floor.
- Complete assigned work orders and preventive maintenance tasks issued by the Maintenance Manager; document all work performed in the CMMS.
- Troubleshoot and maintain the following production equipment:
- Standalone spiral freezers (Messer, Linde) and tunnel freezers
- Depositors, fillers, portioners, and grinders (Unifiller, Handtmann, Vemag, GEA, Rheon, Urschel)
- Mixers (Escher, AMFEC, Hobart, Handtmann, Tonelli)
- PD Pumps (Graco, UNIBLOC)
- Cooking equipment (tilt skillets, Cleveland kettles, Blentech cooker, Chester Jensen ovens, Heat and Control Mastermatic fryers)
- Packaging equipment (flow wrappers, cartoners, X-Ray, metal detectors, tape sealers)
- Cleaning equipment (Viking sanitation cars, rackwashers)
- Industrial automation (ABB and Fanuc robots, self-motorized pulleys)
- Demonstrate hands-on competency in:
- Power distribution and building electrical systems (480V / 240V / 208V three-phase and single-phase, transformers, panelboards, disconnects, breakers, branch circuits)
- Motor controls (across-the-line and reversing starters, contactors, overload relays, control transformers, VFDs, servo drives)
- PLC and HMI systems (Allen-Bradley and Siemens platforms, ladder logic troubleshooting)
- Field devices and instrumentation (photo eyes, proximity sensors, encoders, limit switches, RTDs, thermocouples, pressure/level/flow transmitters, load cells)
- Machine safety circuits (E-stops, safety relays, light curtains, interlocked guarding)
- Conduit and wiring (EMT/rigid conduit, wire pulling, terminations, panel building to NEC standards)
- Reading and red-lining electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, wiring diagrams, and P&IDs
- Refrigeration/freezer control systems, oven/fryer temperature control, burner controls, and flame safety devices
- Work hands-on with the maintenance crew and production team to maintain equipment reliability without compromising safety or food quality.
- Perform preventive maintenance and corrective repairs during the shift, following the maintenance program.
- Support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for electrical and controls failures; escalate recurring issues to the Maintenance Manager.
- Carry out safe repair, replacement, installation, and startup of production equipment.
- Support on-site contractors and report non-compliant work to the Maintenance Manager.
- Identify critical electrical spare parts and communicate needs for ordering/vendor follow-up.
- Respond to emergency electrical issues, equipment failures, and major breakdowns during the shift.
- Use CMMS daily to log work orders, labor, parts, and equipment history.
- Attend plant huddles, communicate shift transitions, and submit end-of-shift reports.
- Share electrical knowledge with maintenance technicians and support their development.
- Ensure compliance with food safety (GMP), sanitation, and regulatory requirements.
- Follow safety procedures (LOTO, NFPA 70E arc flash, OSHA standards, electrical PPE).
- Available for occasional weekend work based on organizational needs.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required; electrical apprenticeship, trade program, or technical degree in Electrical/Electronics/Mechatronics/Industrial Maintenance preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on industrial electrical maintenance experience; food/beverage manufacturing experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot 480V three-phase systems, motor controls, VFDs, and PLC-controlled equipment independently.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder logic, and equipment manuals in English.
- NFPA 70E arc flash training required (must be completed within 90 days of hire if not already certified).
- LOTO authorized-employee training required.
- New Jersey electrical license, journeyman card, or apprentice registration is a plus.
- Powered industrial truck, scissor lift, and aerial lift certification is a plus (must be obtainable).
- Comfortable working in wet, cold (freezer), hot (oven/fryer), and confined environments, and at heights.
- Reliable attendance for assigned shift with availability for overtime and occasional weekend coverage.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM (30-minute break).
