Database Administrator III

Perform activities related to the administration, maintenance, and optimization of database environments, ensuring high availability, performance, security, and reliability. Collaborate with team members, customers, and management to assess database capabilities, resolve complex issues, and support business objectives. Recognized as a highly skilled and proficient technical professional, this role is entrusted with critical systems and sensitive data that require sound technical expertise and strong decision-making. Independently performs complex, high-impact work under minimal supervision, exercising exceptional judgment to evaluate risks, prioritize competing demands, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions that protect the stability, integrity, and availability of enterprise database systems.

About the Organization

University Information Technology (UIT) is the central IT service provider for the University of Utah, reporting to the U's Chief Information Officer. UIT is responsible for many of the university's shared IT services, including the wired and wireless network; Campus Information Services (CIS) portal; UMail, telephone, and online collaboration; digital learning technologies; information security; software licensing; and a host of other IT systems and services.

The University of Utah, located in Salt Lake City, is the flagship institution of the State of Utah's system of higher education. Responsibilities

• Ensure the availability, performance, security, and reliability of enterprise database platforms.
• Manage database monitoring, health checks, alert response, performance tuning, storage and capacity planning.
• Oversee backup and recovery, disaster recovery, encryption, user access controls, and audit compliance.
• Partner closely with application teams and business stakeholders to provision databases, support ServiceNow requests, perform data refreshes, and troubleshoot issues.
• Maintain service availability and work on platform modernization initiatives through automation, cloud adoption, virtualization, and implementation of database upgrades, patches, and vulnerability remediation.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree (or equivalency) plus 6 years of directly related work experience, or a master's degree (or equivalency) plus 4 years of directly related work experience.
• 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical certifications in database administration (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL).
• Cloud certifications (AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI).

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with weekly on-call rotations covering a 24/7/365 schedule.

Pay

$110,000 to $117,000 per year.
