Data Technician

Pay: $23.23 - $31.91/hour
About the Role
This Data Technician position is primarily responsible for entering data into spreadsheets and databases, tracking data collected by community staff, tracking program and project-level data, and serving as backup for sample collection scheduling. This position prepares reports, charts, tables, graphics, and maps associated with program and project-level data. Additional responsibilities may include distributing health education and communication materials and interfacing with local government, residents, and stakeholders. The role involves close collaboration with Sanitarians, Unit Managers, Section Managers, local government officials, residents, and other partners.
Responsibilities
- Data Entry, Management, and Display (70%):
- Retrieve and enter data into spreadsheets and databases in support of unit and section-level programs and projects.
- Ensure data is entered timely and accurately.
- Assist with the development of spreadsheets and databases.
- Display or assist with displaying data in charts, graphs, maps, or other graphics.
- Develop or assist with the development of geodatabase layers.
- Track or assist with tracking project-level and program-level data.
- Report Preparation (20%):
- Create reports in the section data system as requested.
- Assist in the development of unit reports to disseminate appropriate program managers to summarize metrics and relevant programmatic data.
- Provide timely and accurate updates to data tracking processes and management reporting requirements.
- Complete or assist with the completion of time-sensitive reports and review of documents as assigned.
- Training and Other Duties (10%):
- Participate in web-based meetings and training as scheduled.
- Complete any training required by MDHHS.
- Develop and implement training as needed.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. A Bachelor’s degree in public health, public administration, communications, program evaluation, environmental health, physical or biological sciences, sanitary science, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: One year of experience required. Experience or general knowledge in the drinking water industry, plumbing, or other similar trades is preferred.
Skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated, able to complete work in a timely manner, and handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of the initiation, development, accomplishment, and evaluation of public programs or services.
- Ability to analyze and assess operations from the standpoint of management controls, systems, and procedures.
- Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers and external partners.
- Basic understanding or willingness to learn scientific principles, practices, and procedures of toxicology, epidemiology, and biology.
- Basic understanding of data collection and security.
- Physical ability to sit, stand, kneel, and perform office work involving lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
Work Environment
Primarily standard office environments with in-state travel needed to visit local health departments or community meetings.
This position has a direct impact on the quality of services provided by MPHI to MDHHS, supporting the Environmental Health Bureau. The role involves cooperation with technical subject-area experts within the bureau and external stakeholders to track and improve response protocols and manage logistics.
This classification is non-exempt from overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
