About the role

The purpose of the internship is to provide a current student or recent graduate with practical, hands-on experience in a technical setting while contributing to meaningful projects that support the goals of the department and organization. The intern will gain exposure to day-to-day operations, develop key professional skills, and explore potential career paths.

The Data Engineer Intern assists in the research, design, development, analysis, testing, and implementation of data pipelines and data storage. The Intern is responsible for communicating project information to management, project/product management, or other personnel working on projects. They write and maintain documentation and may support more senior developers in their duties. In addition, they support team members and ensure established goals and deadlines are met.

Responsibilities

  • Work with team members to assist in developing solutions using Python, SQL, and other data manipulation tools.
  • Manage multiple tasks and responsibilities with time-sensitive initiatives while delivering high-quality projects on time.
  • With senior engineering assistance, execute high-quality implementations, effective unit tests, and write documentation.
  • With guidance, perform miscellaneous projects as assigned, assisting senior engineers as needed.
  • Aggressively seek new knowledge, skills, and abilities as it relates to data engineering.

  • Execute well-defined tasks/assignments with specific guidance on scope, methodology, expected timing, and outcomes.
  • Work on technical projects of limited scope with instruction; has close supervision on all work and limited decision-making.
  • Limit errors to prevent impact to client operations, costs, or schedules.
  • Work in a collaborative agile team.

Problem Solving & Decision Making

  • Close supervision of all work and limited decision-making.
  • Guidance is required around scope, methodology, expected timing of tasks, and results.
  • Work is reviewed thoroughly for completeness and accuracy.

  • Communicates with peers and leadership to gather, confirm, clarify, and interpret information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate in a team environment.

Requirements

  • Basic technical skills needed to complete routine assignments.
  • Fundamental understanding of Python and SQL.
  • Able to use git to work with code repositories.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Enrollment in a computer science BS degree program and currently in at least the 3rd year of the program.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Pay

A reasonable estimate of the current range is $29.32 - $43.99 per hour. The salary range takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their position, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

Schedule

  • Part-time, 20 hours per week.
  • Currently budgeted until the end of February 2027.
