Data Scientist I
About the role
The Data Scientist I supports internal AI and analytics initiatives by applying foundational AI, data science, statistical, and programming skills to solve well-defined business problems. The incumbent focuses on building, evaluating, and documenting AI, analytical and machine learning solutions under guidance, while ensuring results are accurate, interpretable, and aligned with business context. The Data Scientist I partners with senior data scientists, analytics engineers, and business stakeholders to translate analytical work into clear insights that inform decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Develops and evaluates statistical, machine learning, and AI models using appropriate performance metrics, with guidance from senior team members, including data cleaning, feature preparation, exploratory data analysis, prompt engineering, LLM-based applications, and model evaluation.
- Conducts hypothesis testing, time series analysis, and basic causal or experimental analysis to assess impact and identify trends.
- Transforms analytical results into clear, actionable insights that answer defined business questions.
- Participates in the end-to-end analytics lifecycle, including analysis, validation, basic deployment support, and measurement.
- Contributes to maintaining and improving existing analytics solutions and models.
- Documents solution design, analytical assumptions, data definitions, and limitations in a clear and reproducible manner.
- Works closely with team members to understand business requests, clarify requirements, and ensure analyses pass practical and operational validation checks.
- Learns commonly used AI and analytic techniques and how they are applied to Republic Services business challenges.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
Qualifications
- Skilled at programming in Python in data science, AI, and statistical analysis settings.
- Proficient with relational databases and the ability to write SQL queries.
- Preferred experience working with cloud-based data platforms and infrastructure, such as Snowflake and AWS, to support analytics, AI, and data science workflows.
- Familiarity with version control (Git) and basic collaborative development practices.
- Familiarity with AI-based coding assistants like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code.
- Knowledge of Excel and PowerBI.
- Master’s degree in an analytical field (Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics, Engineering) - preferred.
- Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in an analytical field (Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics, Engineering).
- 1 year of experience with advanced programming in Python and SQL, conducting complex statistical analysis and building machine learning algorithms or AI applications with large databases.
- 1+ years of experience working with large databases to perform complex analysis.
- 1+ years of experience with advanced statistical modeling, machine learning methods, and/or AI models.
