Data Collector/Technical Writer - Maritime Systems

About the Role

This entry-level role is ideal for a candidate eager to contribute in a dynamic, evolving environment, working closely with technicians and engineers to gather accurate and timely information for documentation purposes as directed by the Lead Technical Writer. This position is not hands-on or tool-based but requires physical presence in workshop and shop floor settings. Responsibilities

• Support the development and maintenance of technical documentation for different platforms such as Small Unmanned Surface Vessels (sUSV) and their subsystems, including software, electronics and general support equipment.
• Work on the floor in shop environments, observing, recording, and organizing technical activities and processes as they occur.
• Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as well as standardized document formats and styles across the BlackSea family of platforms.
• Serve as a quality control gate for drafted documents, ensuring proper configuration, formatting, and compliance with internal standards before distribution.
• Travel within the United States up to 10% of the time.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of experience in data collection or technical writing, or an equivalent combination of education and training (e.g., an associate degree or relevant technical certification).
• Strong knowledge of technical documentation practices, including formatting, style guides, version control, and structured authoring.
• Experience working with or editing documents such as operations manuals, Product Technical Bulletins (PSBs), or test procedures.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
• Ability to follow standard templates to collect required information.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong grasp of grammar, clarity, and document consistency.
• Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, training, production, technician, and program management teams.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong task prioritization and time management skills.
• U.S. citizenship required; must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance, if necessary.

Desired Skills

• Experience in technical writing, preferably in a defense, maritime, or engineering-focused environment.
• Familiarity with maritime systems or military systems.
• Experience documenting military systems or government-contracted platforms (e.g., Navy, DoD).
• Experience developing training materials from source technical content.
• Ability to work within an Agile or fast-paced prototyping environment.
• Familiarity with configuration/data management tools (e.g., PLM, Jira, DOORS).

Pay

$22.00 - $26.00 per hour
