Damage Prevention Technician

About the role

This position involves locating and marking company facilities, including transmission and distribution systems, service lines, and other infrastructure. You will work closely with company crews and outside contractors to prevent damage, investigate gas facility damages, and maintain accurate records and maps.

Responsibilities

• Accurately locate and mark company facilities (transmission & distribution systems, service lines, and other facilities).
• Read and interpret system maps.
• Coordinate with company crews and outside contractors for re-marking to prevent damage.
• Conduct investigations of natural gas facility damages to determine root causes.
• Maintain working relationships with area excavators, municipalities, and company personnel responsible for excavation activities.
• Report suspected damages to the company’s system.
• Ensure the accuracy of company maps and records related to damage prevention.
• Complete and maintain accurate records and reports to comply with company and regulatory requirements.
• Assist other operations functions and perform construction, maintenance, and service work when not engaged in damage prevention duties.
• Hold stand-by duty, work shifts, holidays, weekends, and respond to emergency call-outs, including occasional extensive hours.
• Report outside regular work areas as required.
• Identify, address, and report safety and encroachment issues to resolution.
• Operate and inspect assigned company vehicles and equipment safely.
• Adhere to company values, strategies, policies, and procedures, including safety protocols and the company’s Code of Conduct.
• Familiarize yourself with the Safety Manual and participate in creating and maintaining a safe working environment.
• Complete all required safety training.

Requirements

• High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
• Two years of experience in natural gas, damage prevention, service, construction and maintenance, and/or pipeline operations.
• Thorough understanding of company operations.
• Must obtain and maintain minimum Operator Qualifications (OQs) and required classroom training or certifications within six months.
• Valid driver’s license in accordance with company standards.

Skills

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to persuade and influence internal and external customers.
• Ability to use the company’s internet/intranet, upload digital photos of marking activity, and utilize systems for data entry, reference, and retrieval.
• Acute sense of sight and hearing (corrected or uncorrected) and a strong sense of smell.
• Physical ability to perform activities such as bending, stooping, grasping, reaching, twisting, turning, and lifting up to 45 pounds.

Work Conditions

• Works outdoors in all types of weather, exposed to extremes of climate and temperatures, high noise levels, and rough terrain.
• May require overnight travel.
• May have a residence requirement due to call-out response time.
• Works as an individual contributor and/or as a member of a team.

Other Requirements

• This is a Safety-Sensitive position requiring pre- and post-employment screenings, including drug testing as outlined by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).
• Motor vehicle record (MVR) background checks are required.
