Damage Prevention Technician

About the role

This position involves locating and marking company facilities, including transmission and distribution systems, service lines, and other infrastructure. You will collaborate with company crews and contractors to prevent damage, investigate root causes of gas facility damages, and maintain accurate records and maps.

Responsibilities

• Accurately locate and mark company facilities (transmission & distribution systems, service lines, and other facilities).
• Read and interpret system maps.
• Work with company crews and outside contractors to re-mark facilities as needed to prevent damage.
• Conduct investigations of natural gas facility damages to determine root causes.
• Maintain working relationships with area excavators, municipalities, and company personnel responsible for excavation activities.
• Report suspected damages to the company’s system.
• Ensure the accuracy of company maps and records related to damage prevention.
• Complete and maintain accurate records and reports to comply with company and regulatory requirements.
• Assist other operations functions, including construction, maintenance, and service work when not performing damage prevention duties.
• Hold stand-by duty, work shifts, holidays, weekends, and respond to emergency call-outs, including occasional extensive hours.
• Report outside of your regular work area as required.
• Identify, address, and report safety and encroachment issues to resolution.
• Operate and inspect assigned company vehicles and equipment safely.
• Adhere to company values, strategies, policies, and procedures, including safety protocols and the company’s Code of Conduct.
• Complete all required safety training and become familiar with the Safety Manual.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Two years of experience in natural gas, damage prevention, service, construction and maintenance, and/or pipeline operations.
• Thorough understanding of company operations.
• Must obtain and maintain minimum Operator Qualifications (OQs) and required classroom training or certifications within six months.
• Valid driver’s license in accordance with company standards.
• Ability to communicate effectively and influence internal and external customers.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to use the company’s internet/intranet, upload digital photos, and utilize systems for data entry and retrieval.

Work Conditions

• Works outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme climates and temperatures.
• May be exposed to high noise levels and rough terrain.
• May require overnight travel.
• May have a residence requirement due to call-out response time.
• Works as an individual contributor and/or as part of a team.

Physical Demands

• Occasionally perform activities including bending, stooping, grasping, reaching, twisting, and turning.
• Requires acute sense of sight and hearing (corrected or uncorrected) and a strong sense of smell.
• Must be able to lift tools, equipment, and materials up to 45 pounds.

Other Requirements

This is a safety-sensitive position requiring pre- and post-employment screenings, including drug testing as outlined by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and motor vehicle record (MVR) background checks.
