About the Role
The Registered Nurse (RN) Manager oversees all clinical and operational activities during assigned shift and unit, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, and trauma-informed care to individuals experiencing behavioral health and/or substance use crises. Serving as the primary on-site clinical leader, the RN Manager provides direct supervision, guidance, and support to nursing and direct care staff while ensuring compliance with regulatory, licensing, and organizational standards. This role coordinates patient care, crisis intervention, admissions, discharges, and milieu management, maintains staffing coverage, responds to clinical emergencies, and supports staff in implementing individualized care plans. The RN Manager collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, ensures continuity of care across shifts, and communicates critical updates to leadership.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the unit nursing staff.
- Complete physical and mental health assessments.
- Direct adjustments in unit staffing patterns to reflect changes in care requirements, patient census, and staffing resources.
- Ensure that all staff meet or exceed productivity requirements.
- Develop care plans for patients, helping them become as independent as possible.
- Administer and monitor treatment regimens.
- Administer prescribed medications while continuously assessing the patient’s condition under the supervision of qualified medical staff.
- Observe and report behavioral changes.
- Help patients improve their coping abilities.
- Help find coverage or cover open shifts as needed.
- Work with patients’ families to improve the patient’s abilities and help them cope with their family member’s mental illness.
- Record all care information concisely, accurately, and completely in a timely manner, using the appropriate format and forms.
- Remain in compliance with internal and external policies, procedures, regulations, and standards, including River Edge policies and procedures, the Quality Assurance Plan, DBHDD requirements, state licensing standards, and managed care regulations.
- Perform other position-related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Provides direct supervision and leadership to clinical and direct care staff, including Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Health Service Technicians (HSTs).
- Oversees shift operations to ensure safe, effective, and therapeutic care within a 24-hour Crisis and Recovery Center.
- Assigns staff duties, monitors workflow, and ensures appropriate staff-to-patient coverage throughout the shift.
- Provides real-time clinical guidance, coaching, and decision-making support in high-acuity and crisis situations.
- Ensures staff adherence to organizational policies, clinical protocols, and regulatory requirements (e.g., DBHDD, CARF, state and federal standards).
- Monitors staff performance and addresses concerns promptly, including providing redirection, documenting issues, and escalating as appropriate.
- Participates in performance management by providing feedback for evaluations, identifying training needs, and supporting staff development.
- Manages staffing challenges, including call-outs, reassignments, and coordination of coverage to maintain continuity of care.
- Serves as the on-site clinical leader and escalation point for staff concerns, patient issues, and operational challenges.
- Promotes a culture of accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and trauma-informed care.
- Ensures a safe and supportive environment for both staff and individuals served through active supervision oversight.
Requirements
- Current nursing license, in good standing with the Georgia State licensing board.
- Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of psychiatric experience.
- At least five (5) years of nursing supervisory experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills; experience working with healthcare bargaining units.
- Must pass a satisfactory background clearance and pre-employment drug test.
- Provide two (2) professional references (former employers only; no family members).
- Knowledge and experience working with the chronically mentally ill population.
- Strong clinical skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to multitask and remain organized.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Must have the strength to pull and push.
- Ability to travel between sites as required.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a clinical outpatient setting. May involve exposure to individuals experiencing behavioral health crises.
