Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge regarding slide results in relationship to norms for neonate through the geriatric population.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform cytotechnology testing on all specimens submitted for cytotechnology reading and review.
  • Able to make interpretations of cytology specimens.
  • Able to order supplies and equipment required for cytotechnology duties.
  • Able to review test results to ensure quality control.
  • Establishes a system where work being done and test results are checked by supervisory staff for accuracy and timeliness to aid the physician in providing optimal patient care.
  • Remains informed on all current technologies.
  • Treats any patient and/or family member (who presents as surrogate decision maker and has demonstrated right to information) with respect and dignity, should they inquire about cytology readings.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Interacts professionally with all department members, physicians, staff, the administrative team and the Pathologists.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, department managers, staff, the administrative team and the Pathologists.
  • Collaborates with other departments, as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the pathology department and with other departments.
  • Consults other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
  • Maintains current documentation standards and policies.
  • Maintains workload statistics and other workload data using designated recording method.
  • Instructs new employees and students in cytopreparatory techniques and diagnostic criteria.
  • Evaluates, prepares, and selects reagents, supplies, and equipment; establish and maintain inventory.
  • Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots equipment in cytopathology laboratory.
  • Establishes and defines quality control procedures to determine accuracy of cytological diagnosis, quality, and appropriateness of cytopreparatory techniques.
  • Maintains cytotechnologist screening workload statistics and other workload data using designated recording method.
  • Assists with specimen collection and fine needle aspiration biopsies.
  • Prepares written cytopathologic diagnostic reports using recognized cytopathologic / histopathologic terminology.
  • Relates cytomorphologic changes to clinical data.
  • Evaluates and / or determines the proper technical procedure appropriate in the preparation of specific cytology specimens.
  • Conveys information to those professionals directly responsible for patient care in regard to proper collection methods, transportation of specimens, and interpretation of reports.
  • Receives specimens and accompanying requisition reviewing for completeness and accuracy.
  • Accession specimens, determining adequacy and quality of specimen prior to recording the data in appropriate logbook.
  • Processes and prepares all specimens for cytodiagnostic procedures while controlling physical conditions and responding to time factors to insure that physiological state of the specimen is maintained.
  • This includes the use of the centrifuge, liquid based techniques, smear techniques, and cell block methods.
  • Utilizes appropriate fixation and staining techniques to include but not limited to anicolaou staining techniques.
  • Lables slides according to professional quality control methods.
  • Develops and maintains procedures for introduction into the procedure manual.
  • Modifies existing procedures as they need change.
  • Evaluates, prepares, and selects reagents, supplies, and equipment; establish and maintain inventory.

Requirements

  • Graduated from a school of cytotechnology accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
  • Meet federal CLIA requirements for cytotechnologists.
  • Have at least 3 years of full-time experience as a cytotechnologist with the preceding 10 years.
  • ASCP certification of cytology - CT (ASCP), required.

Qualifications

  • Education / Experience / License and Certifications:
  • Have graduated from a school of cytotechnology accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
  • Meet federal CLIA requirements for cytotechnologists.
  • Have at least 3 years of full-time experience as a cytotechnologist with the preceding 10 years.
  • ASCP certification of cytology - CT (ASCP), required.

Skills

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Proficiency in use of cytology equipment and testing.

$15,000 sign-on bonus and relocation assistance.
