Responsibilities
- Screens and evaluates gynecologic (Pap tests) and non-gynecologic cytology specimens for abnormalities
- Performs microscopic examination and identifies cellular changes consistent with benign, pre-malignant, and malignant conditions
- Prepares and stains cytologic specimens using appropriate laboratory techniques
- Affixes to pathologists during fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures, including specimen adequacy assessment when applicable
- Ensures accurate documentation and reporting of findings in the laboratory information system
- Maintains productivity and turnaround time standards for cytology case review
- Correlates cytology findings with clinical history and previous pathology results when available
- Contributes to quality assurance and quality improvement programs, including cytology-histology correlation and rescreening requirements
- Maintains compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory standards for cytology practice
- Maintains equipment, reagents, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized manner
- Troubleshoots technical or specimen-related issues and escalates as needed
- Participates in proficiency testing and continuing education to maintain competency
- Assists with workload distribution and prioritization of cases
- Collaborates with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care
- Supports documentation and billing processes as required
- Participates in special projects and departmental initiatives
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Pathologist
Qualifications
- ASCP Cytotechnologist certification, or equivalent, or completion of a cytotechnology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), required as stated in CLIA (42 CFR493.1483)
- Minimum of one year hospital-based laboratory experience preferred
