The NYC Department of Finance (DOF) administers the city’s tax revenue laws fairly, efficiently, and transparently to instill public confidence and encourage compliance while providing exceptional customer service. The Customer Operations Division oversees DOF Business Centers, the City Register’s Office, and the Land Records, Adjudication, and Collections divisions. The division processes tax payments, parking violations payments, and other charges collected by DOF, records property transfers, adjudicates parking and camera violations, and manages enforcement activities related to unpaid business and excise taxes, parking fines, and Environmental Control Board summonses.
The Land Records Division and its Office of the City Register record and maintain all official documents related to real estate, including deeds, mortgages, and leases. The division operates in every borough except Staten Island, where the Office of the County Clerk provides these functions. Land Records records approximately 550,000 documents annually and collects over $5 billion in real property transfer and mortgage recording taxes. The division maintains and updates NYC property ownership records and provides review and research services. It also administers the property tax lien sale for enforcement, collaborating with the NYC Law Department, the Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget, and the Lien Trust Program. The City Register receives an average of 1,650 submissions daily for review and recording, with a monthly average revenue of $278 million for Fiscal Year 2024.
About the Role
The City Register’s Research & Correction Unit is seeking two dedicated, detail-oriented Customer Service Researchers. Reporting to the Manager of Research & Correction, these roles support the acceptance, review, and recording of documents submitted to the City Register’s offices.
Responsibilities
- Assist customers over the telephone and in person with preparing required cover pages for document submissions.
- Research property ownership.
- Intake, scan, and return documents presented for recording by mail or in person.
- Process certified document requests.
- Retrieve microfilm/microfiche and Land Records books upon request.
- Refile and maintain Land Records books in the library area.
- Perform cashiering duties and open mail.
- Work on special projects within the division as needed.
Requirements
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s department of education or a recognized accrediting organization.
- One year of satisfactory clerical experience.
- Keyboard familiarity with the ability to type at a minimum of 100 keystrokes (20 words) per minute.

- This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week under the Remote Work Pilot Program.
- New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment, though certain city employees may be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County after 2 continuous years of service.

Pay
$42,288.00 – $48,631.00 annually.
