Custodian - Various Work Schedules/Multiple Buildings - (Two Positions)
UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has two job openings for Custodian positions at the Storrs Campus. These are permanent, full-time positions working 37.5 hours per week.
Schedule
- 1st Shift: Wednesday – Sunday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- 1st Shift: Saturday – Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Weekend differential is applied to hours worked on Saturday or Sunday if the entire 7.5-hour shift is worked. Positions require working additional hours during campus events such as Commencement, Sporting Events, and move-in/out weekends during the Fall and Spring semesters. Incumbents must be willing to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends, or holidays). These positions also require performing snow/ice removal duties.
Pay
Salary range: $43,301.00–$54,108.00 yearly ($22.13/hour). Individuals new to state service start at the minimum of the pay plan. Current NP-2 employees’ pay is calculated based on current salary/step.

Responsibilities
- Performs custodial tasks and maintenance of areas such as dormitories, classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms, lavatories, and outdoor areas (e.g., trash around buildings).
- Dusts, mops, sweeps, scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors using equipment such as floor polishers and buffers.
- Washes, dusts, and polishes glass, windows, woodwork, walls, furniture, and metal equipment.
- Makes beds; checks, marks, stores, and issues linens, blankets, and clothing (limited to individual’s work area).
- Collects and counts soiled laundry; distributes, empties, and sterilizes glassware, wash basins, and bedpans.
- Sweeps walks; collects and disposes of trash.
- Reports needs for repairs; performs minor maintenance (e.g., changing light bulbs, replacing fuses, lubricating or tightening door hinges, replacing ceiling or floor tiles).
- Runs errands; inspects buildings for damage and reports conditions to supervisor.
- Removes snow and ice from stairways and walkways; sands and salts stairways and walkways.
- Moves furniture and/or sets up classrooms.
- Performs related duties as required.
Requirements
- Any experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate, care for, and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work.
- Ability to keep records.
- Must be willing and able to work during emergency closures, delayed openings, or respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends, or holidays).
- Must perform snow/ice removal duties.
- Must work additional hours during campus events (e.g., Commencement, Sporting Events, move-in/out weekends).
- May be required to perform job duties at any building located at the Storrs or Regional Campuses.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three or more years of custodial experience in settings such as college campuses, residential facilities, commercial buildings, and/or medical facilities.
- Demonstrated experience operating custodial equipment such as floor scrubbers, swing machines, backpack vacuums, carpet extractors, and/or ride-on auto scrubbers.
Physical Requirements
- Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual/auditory acuity to perform duties.
- Must be able to walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently.
- Must lift, carry, and push materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to utilize ladders, floor polishers, buffers, and vacuums.
- Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
- May be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
Working Conditions
- May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights.
- May be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination (including drug testing) and a criminal background check. These positions are categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff.
