Custodian Relief and Project

Ball State University Housing has an opportunity for a relief and project custodial position. About the role

Under supervision, perform custodial work required for the cleaning and maintenance of facilities, complying with appropriate procedures and techniques for equipment and cleaning products.

Responsibilities

• Clean, renovate, and renew resilient, wood, and hard floor surfaces (e.g., dust mop, sweep, wet mop, spot mop, scrub, polish, spray buff, strip, seal, wax).
• Maintain carpet floor coverings (e.g., vacuum, remove spots and stains, extraction cleaning of carpet and upholstered furniture).
• Clean and service all restroom areas, including lavatories, toilets, urinals, showers, and bathtubs.
• Dust, vacuum, clean, and/or polish furniture and surfaces; clean fixtures, hardware, and windows; change lighting and clean fixtures.
• Collect and dispose of trash, refuse, recycling materials, and debris.
• Sweep debris and/or shovel snow from outside entrances, landings, steps, and walks; clean exterior surfaces of windows, doors, and building fixtures.
• Clean appliances (e.g., stoves, ovens, microwaves, refrigerators, ice machines, washers, dryers).
• Acquire and maintain knowledge of job-related chemicals and environmental, health, and physical concerns.
• Lock and unlock doors as required, following departmental policies and procedures.
• Change bed linens and make beds with clean linens as required.
• Arrange, move, and/or replace furniture, supplies, and equipment; report items requiring repair; perform minor repairs.
• Load and unload trucks or other vehicles; place and store deliveries; inform supervisor of needed supplies.
• Guide, assist, and instruct student custodial employees.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• No allergies to soaps, cleaning agents, chemicals, or environmental factors in custodial service.
• Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding of various heights.
• Ability to read and comprehend safety policies, hazardous materials information, university policies, and perform basic mathematical functions.
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license; must be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy if required by assignment.
• Ability to perform all mental and physical requirements outlined in job duties, including:
  • Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, balance, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, and grasp.
  • Visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, distinguish colors, and assess shapes and shadows.
• Must successfully pass manlift certification, if required, within a reasonable period after hire.
• At least one year of work experience (full-time or part-time).
• Must be 18 years or older.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in custodial work.

Pay

$18.68 - $19.30 per hour.

Schedule

• Full-time, on-campus position.
• Academic year hours: Friday–Tuesday, 7:30 AM–4:00 PM.
• Summer hours: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM.
