About the Role
The State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families (DCF) is recruiting a Custodian located at our John Dempsey Hospital located in Middletown, CT.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to perform custodial tasks and maintenance of areas such as classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms and lavatories including outdoor areas (i.e. trash around buildings).
Examples of Duties
- Dust, mop, sweep, scrub, strip, wax and polish floors, shampoo carpets using appropriate equipment such as floor polishers and buffers
- Wash, dust and polish glass including windows, woodwork, walls, furniture and metal equipment
- Collect and dispose of all trash and recycling in the appropriate containers
- Report needs for repairs
- Perform minor maintenance
- Inspect building for damage and report conditions to supervisor
- Make beds
- Check, mark, store and issue linens, blankets, and clothing (limited to individual's work area not to include counting and inspection for a larger area)
- Collect and count soiled laundry
- Distribute, empty and sterilize glassware, wash basins and bedpans
- Sweep walks
- Run errands
- May change light bulbs and replace fuses
- May lubricate or tighten door hinges, drawers, cabinets, etc.
- May replace ceiling or floor tiles
- May remove snow and ice from stairways and walkways around buildings
- May sand and salt stairways and walkways
- May move furniture and/or set-up classrooms
- Perform related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications
Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience performing custodial work in a hospital or institutional setting
- Experience stripping, waxing and burnishing floors using floor polishers and buffers
- Experience setting up and breaking down school events and classrooms
- Experience keeping high traffic areas clean and safe during inclement weather events
- Experience performing minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work
Special Requirements
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.
Physical Requirements
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination may be required.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
