Custodian - NEMS

Department: Custodial – Northeast Middle School
Reports to: Site Supervisor

About the role

Maintains the district's school buildings in a state of operating excellence to ensure no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

Responsibilities

• Assist in maintaining seasonal grounds work (snow, lawn).
• Clean and preserve designated spaces, equipment, etc. in the building.
• Restock disposable items and provide head custodian with inventory usage and data.
• Assist visiting public with directions and setting up needed equipment.
• Maintain building and grounds security each school day.
• Operate and care for custodial machinery and equipment.
• Perform minor building repair work.
• Substitute for head custodian on a short-term basis.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Assist in cleaning boilers.
• Perform related work as required by supervisor.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups and other employees.
• Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using American units of money, weight, volume, and distance.
• Basic knowledge of job-related computer hardware and software applications.
• Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization.
• Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
• Awareness of district requirements and Board of Education Policies.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear.
• Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head, and reach forward.
• Occasionally required to sit.
• Continuously use hand strength to grasp tools and climb ladders.
• Frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk.
• Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (e.g., cleaning supplies, pails, unloading trucks); occasionally lift heavier items with assistance.
• Push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines.
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

• Regularly works indoors; occasionally works outdoors.
• Works near or with moving mechanical equipment.
• Occasionally works with toxic or caustic chemicals (e.g., petroleum products, degreasers, sprays).
• Able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
• Moderate noise level in the work environment.

Pay

$25.85 - $28.21 per hour (per contractual agreement).

Schedule

2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
