Custodian

About the Role

The custodian's primary responsibility is to maintain a safe, clean, and healthy physical environment at a District-assigned facility by providing custodial, janitorial, and maintenance services. This ensures full educational use of school facilities for students, staff, parents, and the school community.

Responsibilities

• Meets regularly with the head custodian to coordinate janitorial and custodial needs.
• Follows and implements safe work practices and wears appropriate protective equipment, including a District-provided uniform.
• Performs general cleaning and maintenance of the school building, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing according to established district practices.
• Assists with snow removal from driveways, parking lots, bus areas, sidewalks, and school entrances using District-provided shovels and machines.
• Maintains the safety and security of the building and grounds, including performing the final security check of the facility at the end of the shift.
• Assumes responsibility for general fire safety of the school.
• Sanitizes washroom fixtures, including toilets, urinals, washbowls, fixtures, walls, partitions, and floors according to established district criteria.
• Removes refuse from the building and places it in outside refuse containers.
• Moves and sets up chairs, tables, staging, etc., as required for school events.
• Maintains the grounds surrounding the school as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the head custodian, building principal, and Director of Maintenance and Operations.
• May be asked to work during school holidays, weekends, days, evenings, and overtime during inclement weather as directed by the Operations & Maintenance Manager.
• Demonstrates collaboration in a team atmosphere.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Demonstrates the ability to communicate, understand, and follow directions both written and orally in English.
• Some heavy lifting and physical labor required; must lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds regularly and occasionally lift and/or move up to and over 90 pounds with help.
• Satisfactory history of safe, efficient, and effective use of custodial products and equipment.
• Must properly handle chemical cleaners and supplies following school training and manufacturer’s directions.
• Must meet district cleaning, maintenance, and safety standards, with familiarity in Green cleaning practices. Experience with floor stripping using a Square-Scrub type of machine is a plus.
• Demonstrates the ability to maintain effective and professional working relationships with students, staff, supervisors, and members of the community.

Physical Demands

The role requires the ability to perform various physical tasks, including standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, lifting, and bending, as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities. The work environment may involve exposure to typical levels of noise and activity associated with a school setting.

Hourly rate, length of work year, and ongoing service shall be aligned with the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Board of Education and the ASP.
