About the Role

This position is responsible for performing interior and exterior building cleaning maintenance in an assigned area. Flexibility in work hours is necessary to meet event schedules. The role includes preparing facilities for special events, moving and arranging furniture, and assisting with specialized tasks such as inventory of equipment and maintenance of mechanical/electrical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Office, Classroom and Facilities Maintenance (40%)
    • Vacuums, bonnets, and extracts carpeted areas using appropriate equipment and chemicals.
    • Dust mops and wet mops tile floors, including stains and spots, using paid method and semi-automatic scrubbers.
    • Empties trash, cleans containers, and replaces liners, with special care in research and lab areas.
    • Dusts furniture, blinds, and other surfaces; cleans glass, ledges, chalk, and dry marker boards.
    • Handles bio-hazards in some work locations.
  • Restrooms / Shower Cleaning (15%)
    • Cleans and disinfects sinks, stools, urinals, sanitary napkin receptacles, and trash containers.
    • Cleans and polishes fixtures, wet mops floors, and dusts all surfaces.
    • Replaces soap and paper goods; cleans floor drains and adds water as scheduled.
    • Scrubs walls and floors with semi-automatic scrubbing equipment; acid cleans urinals and toilets.
  • Hallways, Stairways, Elevators, Entrances and Exteriors (10%)
    • Dust mops, scrubs, and burnishes resilient surfaces using specialized equipment.
    • Wet mops stains on tiled areas and floor mats; spot cleans walls, doors, carpets, and kickplates.
    • Washes windows, rails, and exterior entrances; removes snow and ice as needed.
    • Cleans fire extinguisher cases, display cases, drinking fountains, and furniture.
    • Maintains exterior areas, handicap access ramps, elevator cabs, and doors.
  • Floor Maintenance (10%)
    • Strips floors and performs chemical detergent scrubs in non-carpeted areas.
    • Burnishes tile floors, bonnets, and deep extracts carpeted areas.
    • Cleans and maintains specialty floors (wood, cork, quarry tile) using automatic equipment.
  • Supplies, Chemical and Equipment Maintenance (10%)
    • Cleans and performs minor maintenance on hand tools and mechanized equipment (burnishers, scrubbers, vacuums).
    • Reports equipment malfunctions or non-minor repairs to supervisor.
    • Ensures proper use, mixing, and safety procedures for chemicals to avoid injury or equipment damage.
  • Other Related Work (15%)
    • Locks and unlocks building doors; assists with special university events and emergencies.
    • Reports building repair needs, found items, and other concerns to supervisor.
    • Raises and lowers flags in designated areas; participates in training and staff meetings.
    • Assists with snow removal and surface treatment.

Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry at least 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work under a variety of temperature extremes and weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Flexibility with assigned work hours and daily schedule to accommodate varying event dates and times.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and practices used in cleaning operations.
  • Custodial experience in large residential or commercial buildings.
  • Experience with the operation, use, and care of vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.
  • Advanced training in custodial and high-volume cleaning operations.
  • Experience interacting with customers and/or the public.
