About the Role

This position performs interior and exterior building cleaning maintenance in an assigned area, with flexibility in work hours to meet event schedules. Duties include cleaning carpeted and non-carpeted areas, collecting and disposing of trash, removing stains from various surfaces, and maintaining restrooms. The role also involves preparing for special events at the Lied Center, moving furniture, and assisting with specialized tasks such as equipment inventory or maintenance of mechanical/electrical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Office, Classroom, and Facilities Maintenance (40%)
    • Vacuum, bonnet, and extract carpeted areas using appropriate equipment and chemicals.
    • Dust mop and wet mop tile floors, including stains and spots, using paid methods and semi-automatic scrubbers.
    • Empty trash, clean containers, and replace liners, with special care in research and lab areas.
    • Dust furniture, blinds, and other surfaces; clean glass, ledges, chalk, and dry marker boards.
    • Address bio-hazards in some work locations.
  • Restroom / Shower Cleaning (15%)
    • Clean and disinfect sinks, toilets, urinals, sanitary napkin receptacles, and trash containers.
    • Polish fixtures, wet mop floors, and dust all surfaces.
    • Replace soap and paper goods; clean floor drains and add water as scheduled.
    • Scrub walls and floors with semi-automatic equipment; acid clean urinals and toilets.
    • Follow standard procedures and safety precautions.
  • Hallways, Stairways, Elevators, Entrances, and Exteriors (10%)
    • Dust mop, scrub, and burnish resilient surfaces using specialized equipment.
    • Wet mop stains on tiled areas and floor mats; spot clean walls, doors, carpets, and kickplates.
    • Wash windows, rails, and exterior entrances; remove snow and ice as needed.
    • Maintain exterior areas, handicap access ramps, elevator cabs, and doors.
    • Clean fire extinguisher cases, display cases, drinking fountains, and furniture.
  • Floor Maintenance (10%)
    • Strip and chemical detergent scrub non-carpeted floors.
    • Burnish tile floors, deep extract carpets, and maintain specialty floors (wood, cork, quarry tile) using automatic equipment.
    • Follow safety procedures to prevent injury or equipment damage.
  • Supplies, Chemical, and Equipment Maintenance (10%)
    • Clean and perform minor maintenance on hand tools and mechanized equipment (e.g., burnishers, scrubbers, vacuums).
    • Report equipment malfunctions or non-minor repairs to supervisor.
    • Maintain knowledge of chemical use, mixing, and safety procedures.
  • Other Related Work (15%)
    • Lock and unlock building doors; assist with special university events and emergencies.
    • Report building repair needs and found items according to policy.
    • Raise and lower flags in designated areas.
    • Participate in training, staff meetings, and committees as assigned.
    • Assist with snow removal and surface treatment.

Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry at least 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work under a variety of temperature and weather extremes, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Flexibility with assigned work hours and daily schedule to accommodate event dates and times.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and practices used in cleaning operations.
  • Custodial experience in large residential or commercial buildings.
  • Experience operating, using, and maintaining vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.
  • Advanced training in custodial and high-volume cleaning operations.
  • Experience interacting with customers and/or the public.

Pay

$18/hour
