Custodian Lead
About the role
Under the supervision of the Custodial Services Supervisor/Custodial Services Manager, this position is responsible for assisting with trash responsibilities, mentoring and providing direction to staff, and providing a safe and clean maintained residential facility for residents and guests. The Custodial Lead will oversee a team responsible for maintaining 1,000,000 square feet of residential housing space and serving over 4,000 students during the academic year. During the summer months, the Custodial Lead will lead student and full-time employees through the residential conference and orientation season, intern center, and summer room clean program, which flips nearly 2,800 residence hall rooms within 1,200 suites. The Custodial Lead serves as the point of contact with partners within the halls (Restaurant Operations) and some external partners (FAA Waste and Recycling, Waste Management, etc.).
Responsibilities
- Utilize basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables
- Monitor and secure facility interior and exterior entrances and report issues to appropriate entities
- Maintain organization of supply areas and equipment, document inventory, and request additional supplies as needed
- Document and report repairs, violations, and pest control needs
- Maintain clean and clear walkways free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
- Schedule, monitor, and communicate with staff and assist with basic training
- Respond to facility emergency and hazardous situations and escalate incidents according to established policies and procedures
Working Conditions
Work inside State of WI owned/leased and Foundation leased spaces including vehicles, garages, residence halls, sidewalks, and yards. Work with trash chutes can be dirty and often smelly. Weather conditions range from hot and humid (cleaning non-air-conditioned rooms in summer) to below 0°F when removing snow and ice from sidewalks and entrances.
Requirements
- Forklift driving experience
- University Housing trash removal experience
- Ability to pull/push 100 pounds, lift up to 50 pounds, and carry up to 75 pounds for a distance of 25 feet
- Prior experience using and maintaining custodial tools (auto scrubbers, extractors, vacuums, fill stations, chemicals)
- Customer service experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic understanding of a work order system
- Ability to interact positively and professionally with peers and students
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience leading a group to accomplish a goal
- Computer skills including email, Teams, and Excel
