Description
Under immediate (I) or general (II, III, IV) supervision, provides administrative or clinical psychiatric social work services in a multi-cultural environment through the use of individual, family, or group therapy, case management, interagency collaboration, and community organization; and, performs related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
- Psychiatric Social Worker I - Entry level classification where emphasis is on learning casework methods, procedures, policies under close supervision as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Requires registration with the California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Behavioral Science Examiners and obtaining licensure within the Board’s Rules and Regulations.
- Psychiatric Social Worker II - Journey level classification providing standard services under general supervision.
- Requires registration with the California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Behavioral Science Examiners and obtaining licensure within the Board’s Rules and Regulations.
- Psychiatric Social Worker III - Fully licensed, advanced journey clinical level assigned more leadership responsibilities and complex clinical and case management responsibilities.
- Awarded greater skill and depth of job knowledge in assessing problem situations, and formulating and implementing plans for services.
- Psychiatric Social Worker IV - Fully licensed, expert level which can accept leadership responsibilities, the most complex clinical and case management responsibilities, and may provide clinical supervision when called upon by the program manager.
- May also supervise specialized teams or coordinate centralized, department-wide client support services.
Examples Of Duties
- Psychiatric Social Worker I - Performs assessments, individual or group therapy, psycho-education case management for clients and their families in collaboration with other members of the treatment team; clinical charting; and, discharge planning.
- Participates in treatment and case management team meetings.
- Collaborates with community health, education, social services, juvenile or criminal justice agencies, or other services to assist the client and/or family member.
- Participates in treatment and case management team meetings.
- Psychiatric Social Worker II - In addition to the above listed tasks, incumbents also:
- Perform more independent treatment and case management activities.
- Psychiatric Social Worker III - In addition to the above listed tasks, incumbents also may perform any combination of the following tasks:
- Performs complex clinical and case management activities.
- Aids in planning, organizing, and coordinating mental health or substance abuse services and programs.
- Aids in monitoring client outcomes and cost data; and, makes recommendations for improved performance.
- Makes presentations to local agencies, community groups, visitors, and at colleges.
- Aids in planning, organizing, and coordinating mental health or substance abuse services and programs.
- Performs complex clinical and case management activities.
- Psychiatric Social Worker IV - In addition to the above listed tasks, incumbents also may perform any combination of the following tasks:
- Performs the most complex clinical and case management assignments.
- Provides training and clinical supervision for subordinate professional and paraprofessional staff or social work students in field work placement.
- Supervises specialized teams or coordinates department wide client service functions.
- Develops and monitors interagency agreements, policies, procedures, and protocols as needed.
- Aids Program Supervisors with special projects.

- Provides training and clinical supervision for subordinate professional and paraprofessional staff or social work students in field work placement.

Typical Qualifications
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Depending on the level in the series:
- Some to comprehensive knowledge of: social work concepts and methods applied to the seriously mentally ill or alcohol/drug addicted; the diagnostic and assessment process; the application of appropriate intervention techniques; psychosocial and cultural factors affecting mental health or substance abuse service delivery; the scope and activities of private and public agencies; mental health or substance abuse case management; and, the principles of supervision and training.
- Some to thorough ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with others as part of a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team; assess, treat, and manage cases for an ethnically diverse population of seriously mentally ill or addicted clients; communicate effectively in writing and orally, including public speaking; efficiently organize time and workload responsibilities; effectively utilize agency and community resources; conduct group meetings, interpret and explain laws, rules and regulations to other staff, clients, family members, and the public; and plan, organize and supervise the work of others, as required.
- Education/Experience: Possession of a Masters degree in Social Work from an accredited university for all levels PLUS:
- Psychiatric Social Worker I: Must be registered as an MSW Intern with the California Department of Consumers Affairs Board of Behavioral Science Examiners, and obtain licensure within the Boards Rules and Regulations. Prior field work placement in a psychiatric setting is desirable.
- Psychiatric Social Worker II: In addition to the requirements for Psychiatric Social Worker I, must have at least one year of experience in a psychiatric or alcohol/drug services setting working with seriously emotionally disturbed and/or addicted children or adolescents, or seriously mentally ill and/or addicted adults or seniors, and their families. Certain assignments may require specific work experience with an age group or type of service.
- Psychiatric Social Worker III: In addition to the requirements for Psychiatric Social Worker I, must have a California License as a Clinical Social Worker and have at least three years of experience in a psychiatric or alcohol/drug treatment setting working with seriously emotionally disturbed and/or alcohol/drug addicted children or adolescents, or seriously mentally ill and/or alcohol/drug addicted adults or seniors, and their families. Certain assignments may require specific work experience with an age group or type of service.
- Psychiatric Social Worker IV: In addition to the requirements for Psychiatric Social Worker I, must have a California License as a Clinical Social Worker and at least four years of experience in a psychiatric or alcohol/drug treatment setting working with seriously emotionally disturbed and/or alcohol/drug addicted children or adolescents, or seriously mentally ill and/or alcohol/drug addicted adults or seniors, and their families. May be required to have specific work experience with an age group or type of service.
