About the Role

The Residence Life Custodial Team provides cleaning and light maintenance services in and around the residence halls and associated areas, delivering excellent service to students and visitors in every community. The primary focus is on cleaning public areas, including restrooms, carpeted and hard-surface floors, trash removal, room setups, and related duties.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a lead worker, providing direction to a team of Custodian I’s.
  • Perform routine checklist inspections and submit detailed end-of-day reports outlining custodial status, maintenance needs, and operational updates.
  • Inspect areas for cleanliness and ensure the work crew completes all assigned tasks.
  • Answer employee questions regarding tasks and responsibilities.
  • Ensure all tracking reports are filled out per protocol.
  • Verbally address performance issues and report disciplinary concerns to supervisors.
  • Assess and organize workload for a team of custodians.
  • Assist the Custodial Supervisor Team in training employees.
  • Ensure custodial staff compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), safety protocols, uniform policies, and other department procedures.
  • Maintain custodial equipment, report mechanical issues, and keep a current inventory of supplies.
  • Perform administrative tasks, including producing inventory reports, reviewing work orders, assisting with timesheet review, and tracking furniture.
  • Assist with pest control efforts.
  • Perform custodial duties in any areas managed by the department.
  • Actively participate as a team member in support of the department’s mission.

Requirements

  • Progressively responsible custodial experience in hospitality, commercial, or industrial fields, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and related experience.
  • Experience leading, directing, and/or training staff.
  • Proficient experience using computers and various software applications.
  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points). If the successful candidate has an out-of-state license, they must obtain a Montana license within 60 days.
  • Ability to work varied shifts or areas to meet departmental needs, depending on school and event cycles.
  • Occasional work outside and in inclement weather.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications or classes related to custodial work, sanitation, or building maintenance.

Physical Demands

  • Transport and move items up to 50 lbs and occasionally up to 100 lbs (e.g., stacking chairs, folding tables, transporting floor sealer).
  • Move heavy furniture in and out of residents’ rooms and other department areas.
  • Move products and items up and down stairs.
  • Ascend/descend stairs and step ladders.
  • Remain stationary or move about for extended periods.
  • Operate cleaning equipment.
  • Shovel snow.
  • Regular exposure to cleaning solutions.

Pay

$25.15 per hour.

Schedule

  • Full-time (1.0 FTE), fiscal year (12-month) classified position.
  • Non-exempt (hourly), union-affiliated role.
