About the role
This is a full-time, in-person, essential position within the Division of Facilities Management (DFM), a customer-driven support organization responsible for operating, maintaining, and managing Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) facilities and campuses. The role ensures compliance with all applicable standards to provide a safe, sanitary, and effective environment for clients, youth, residents, patients, consumers, and staff, while enhancing quality of life in CDHS facilities and surrounding neighborhoods.
The position provides custodial and housekeeping services for a wide range of agencies, including the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo, Division of Youth Corrections, and facilities supporting developmental disabilities. The role must meet regulatory requirements set by JCAHO (Joint Commission for Accrediting Health Organizations), the Colorado Department of Public Health, and other agencies.
Work is performed in the following facilities within the South District:
- Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP)
- Pueblo Regional Center (PRC)
- Department of Corrections (DOC) facilities
- Division of Youth Services (Zeb Pike, Spring Creek, and Pueblo Youth Services Center)
- Veteran’s Community Living Centers in the Southern District, as needed
Employees in essential positions may be required to work unexpected or unusual hours to perform emergency services without delay or interruption.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily cleaning, sanitizing, and servicing of assigned work areas, including sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming, restroom cleaning, and other duties as assigned.
- Drive State vehicles between agency sites to perform services.
- Conduct daily detail cleaning of assigned areas, including washing walls, doors, frames, sills, windows, baseboards, fixtures, furnishings, ceilings, vents, and light fixtures.
- Perform weekly project work, including hard floor and carpet maintenance.
- Conduct project floor work, such as buffing, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, and sealing hard floors, as well as spot cleaning, shampooing, and extracting carpets.
- Collect and dispose of trash and biohazard waste, transporting it to proper disposal locations.
- Move furniture, appliances, equipment, and supplies manually or using moving equipment to conduct project floor work.
- Assist in snow removal when needed.
- Clean and service equipment, maintain janitorial closets, supplies, stock levels, and chemical labeling requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Call Back: Eligible nonexempt employees may be required to report to work before or after a scheduled shift. Employees are entitled to a minimum of two hours of regular base pay (call back pay) or pay for actual time spent, whichever is greater. Call back time counts as work time.
Requirements
- Three (3) months of cleaning experience, as stated on your application.
- Must be a Colorado state resident at the time of application and throughout employment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid, non-restricted Colorado driver’s license. Out-of-state license holders must obtain a Colorado license within 30 days of employment.
- Must successfully pass a full pre-employment criminal background check, including fingerprinting. Felony convictions, crimes of moral turpitude, or misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify applicants.
- Must successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Check and be willing to drive State vehicles as part of daily work assignments.
- Must be available to respond in person to after-hours calls for essential or emergency services.
- Must be willing to work varied hours, including outside normal business hours, for coverage, weather-related issues, or emergencies.
- Must submit to and pass an annual tuberculosis (TB) test.
- Must be willing to receive an annual influenza vaccination or provide documentation for a medical or religious exemption.
- Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose this information on the application and explain why it should not disqualify them from the position.
Conditions of Employment: This position involves exposure to hazardous materials, moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock, and working in high or exposed places.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant years of State service.
- Ability to maintain a set schedule to complete cleaning, maintenance, and tasks to meet facility needs.
- Knowledge of cleaning procedures for various facilities, including project floor work such as buffing and waxing.
- Ability to maintain cleaning supplies inventory and order new supplies appropriately.
- Experience identifying problematic areas within facilities and performing thorough cleaning, including scrubbing surfaces, moving furniture, shoveling snow, and disposing of waste.
- Experience cleaning and maintaining facilities such as educational institutions, hospitals, or long-term care facilities.
- Experience with sweeping, mopping, cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, dusting, and vacuuming.
- Experience working with mental health or locked adolescent populations.
