Custodian

About the role

This is a physically demanding position requiring standing, walking, and lifting for up to 8 hours. The incumbent works with cleaning chemicals and equipment in a climate-controlled building environment with noisy and dusty areas, and may also work outside in various weather conditions. The role involves cleaning up blood, saliva, and other bodily fluids.

Essential functions

• Meet or exceed the expectations of the Custodial Manager for the cleanliness and appearance of USSRC buildings, facilities, and grounds
• Sweep, wax, vacuum, and shampoo floors where applicable throughout the USSRC
• Clean office and common area windows
• Clean and dust USSRC internal and external exhibits
• Collect trash and refuse from offices and grounds
• Use pressure washer to clean sidewalks and buildings
• Move and transport various equipment, materials, and waste in an accurate and timely manner
• Ensure that the Custodial department has adequate supplies necessary to conduct daily operations
• Meet or exceed legal, industry and professional standards for the use and disposal of cleaning chemicals and waste
• Operate the lift loft in an efficient and safe manner and in accordance with written policies
• Meet or exceed the expectations of the Custodial Management team for the accurate and timely completion of tasks and assignments

Required education and experience

High school or G.E.D. required. No experience necessary. This is a will-train position.

Physical demands

• Standing, walking, and climbing stairs for up to 8 hours
• Carrying and lifting supplies and items up to 40lbs waist high
• Bending, kneeling, reaching to store/retrieve supplies, and to clean high, low areas, and behind exhibits
• Inspecting, visually and physically, areas for cleanliness
• Ability to communicate effectively with employees and guests
• Working directly with cleaning chemicals such as bleach and floor stripper
• Operating medium weight cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, polishers, and waxers
• Moving desks and furniture
• Stretching and bending, often in awkward positions

Work environment

• Climate-controlled building environment with noisy and dusty areas
• Daily work with dangerous and toxic cleaning products that can cause injury, sickness, skin irritation, and rashes if not properly utilized; products give off noxious fumes and powerful odors
• Regularly required to clean up blood, saliva, and other bodily fluids
• May involve working outside in various weather conditions
