Position Overview
Perform a variety of cleaning and disinfecting within their assigned buildings/areas to maintain a clean, safe work environment for the campus community.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities
- Lock and unlock interior and exterior doors as directed.
- Vacuum and spot carpet and fabric furniture.
- Report items in need of repair or replacement via work order.
- Complete and close all work orders assigned to you within the eight-day requirement.
- Guide and assist in training student employees.
- Maintain inventory and supply order.
- Acquire and maintain knowledge of job-related chemicals, proper labeling and environmental health and physical concerns.
- Maintain safety, cleanliness, proper storage and use of equipment, vehicles and personal safety equipment.
- Remove trash and recycling from assigned areas.
- Dust, wash windows, replace light bulbs and clean light fixtures.
- Clean writing boards and maintain supply of chalk and erasers.
- Clean and service lavatories, locker rooms, shower rooms, lounges and kitchenettes.
- Maintain and/or renew hard floor surfaces.
- Perform laundry related duties as directed.
- Distribution and collection of linens, rollaway beds and bed making duties, when necessary.
- Sweeping/shoveling snow from all steps, walks, porches and terraces as directed, servicing smoking urns and policing grounds.
- Move supplies, equipment, and furniture as directed and set room according to custodial work sheet and or customer specifications.
- Perform pest control duties.
- Assist in coverage of absent custodial personnel job responsibilities.
- Any other duties assigned to you by your supervisor.
Education/Experience/Skills
- High School diploma, General Educational Development (GED), or other high school equivalency credentials.
- Demonstrated ability based on past employment history to work independently and in team working environment.
- Neat in appearance and in the performance of assigned duties.
- Maintain a level of cleanliness as required by departmental and building standards.
- The ability to follow oral and written directions and/or instructions (labels).
- The ability to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions, and to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions.
- The ability to work and interact with a diverse community.
- The ability to interact with campus visitors, contractors, and constituents in a helpful and friendly manner.
- Demonstrate general computer knowledge (Email/Calendar/Google Docs/Zoom/Work Orders).
- The ability to be on-call for weather related duties (snow removal).
- The ability to work overtime to meet the needs of campus and for special events.
- The ability to work some evening hours for special department events.
Physical Requirements
- The ability to pass a pre-employment physical assessment.
- The ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, balance, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger grasp, and exert up to 100lbs of force occasionally, 50lbs of force frequently, and 20lbs constantly.
- The ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
Union Salary and Benefits
The full-scale wage for the Custodian position is $27.18 per hour. New employees will be hired with a one-year training period. At the start of the training period, wages are reduced by $2.00 per hour from the base classification rates. Employees will receive a $1.00 per hour increase after six months, and another $1.00 per hour increase after twelve months.
