About the role
The custodian’s position is primarily to provide support at various college buildings as directed by the facilities operations building manager. A major aspect of the role is to ensure facilities are open and secured at the end of the day, in addition to maintaining cleanliness and performing minor maintenance. The individual must be cognizant of fire alarm and security systems.
Responsibilities
- Cleaning of hardwood surfaces, carpeting and upholstery, terrazzo and tile/linoleum floors
- Cleaning of restrooms, stairwells, classrooms, offices, etc.
- Ordering of supplies/cleaning products
- Replacement of fluorescent tubes and light bulbs
- Snow removal from walkways
- Opening and securing of facilities
- Unclogging of toilets/sinks
- Identification of chemicals and cleaning fluids for appropriate tasks
- Use of pallet jack and scissors lift
- Driving a vehicle
- Performing light electrical and plumbing work (e.g., using pliers, screwdrivers, plungers)
- Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Requirements
- Minimum of a high school degree or GED diploma
- Commercial cleaning experience in an educational environment preferred (training on the job available with limited to no experience)
- Must be able to use a variety of custodial equipment, including:
- Carpet extractors (walk behind/push-pull)
- Taski dry foam swing scrubbers
- Floor hand rotary and vibrating scrubbers
- Wet vacuums
- 4’; 6’; 8’; and 10’ ladders
- Carpet bonnet machines
- Cleaning chemicals and dispensing systems
- Gas and electric power sprayers
- General custodial equipment (mops, buckets, brooms, dusters, etc.)
- Snow blowers and salt spreaders
- Man lifts and pallet jacks
- Must be able to drive a vehicle
- Must maintain good attendance and punctuality
- Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing (e.g., via email)
- Ability to provide customer service to faculty, staff, students, and the general public
- Ability to work independently and adjust to a flexible, changing schedule
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to work indoors with or without heat and air conditioning
- Ability to work late at night into early morning
- Ability to work outdoors during all types of weather

Pay
- Custodian I: $18.95 - $22.50 per hour (2026-2027 wage schedule)
- Custodian II: $20.12 - $23.12 per hour (2026-2027 wage schedule)
- Shift differential: $0.55 per hour for 3rd shift
