About the role
Under supervision from the Custodial Squad Leader or Custodial Supervisor, performs a wide variety of tasks including cleaning, unskilled building maintenance, event set-ups, and animal and insect control. Responsibilities involve medium to heavy lifting activities inside and outside a variety of the College’s facilities such as office spaces, laboratories, eating facilities, public areas, and auditoriums. Implements recycling procedures.
Responsibilities
- Unlocks and locks assigned spaces.
- Cleans, mops, strips, waxes, and buffs all hard surface floors (e.g., stairways, public restrooms, kitchen areas, laboratories, dining rooms, hallways).
- Vacuums and shampoos carpeted offices, hallways, and common areas.
- Washes windows (inside and outside) in entrance halls; dusts office furniture and window sills.
- Cleans public restrooms and showers; scours, disinfects, and deodorizes toilet bowls and sinks; wipes and cleans counters/vanities; polishes mirrors; replaces and stocks restroom supplies.
- Empties office and common area trash cans; implements recycling procedures; picks up, bags, and removes all trash inside buildings as well as loose trash around building perimeters.
- Changes light bulbs and cleans light fixture lenses using ladders when necessary.
- Performs major set-up and break-down for College events (e.g., arranging 30 8FT tables and 350 chairs); sets up tables, chairs, lecterns, podiums, dividers, platforms, coat racks, etc., based on work order specifications.
- Sweeps dirt and leaves, shovels snow from walkways, and spreads sand on walkways at least 3 feet from all entrances to buildings.
- Sets traps to catch rodents and releases them outside; sprays inside and outside of buildings with chemicals to control insects.
- Keeps note of cleaning materials and equipment needed; notifies Squad Leader when supplies are low or equipment needs repair or replacement.
- May act in the Squad Leader’s absence or assist the Squad Leader as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- 1–2 years of experience in custodial work or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying light to medium-weight objects.
- Must be able to work from ladders and step-ladders to clean and maintain light fixtures.
- Ability to operate and maintain heavy industrial cleaning equipment (e.g., vacuum cleaners, powered scrubbers, buffers, carpet shampooers) and other hand-operated tools.
- Understanding or knowledge of the safe use of various chemical substances used in cleaning and insect control.
- Familiarity or ability to learn different table/chair arrangements for event set-ups.
- Must be willing to work mandatory overtime when required.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of training in Hazard Communication and Blood Borne Pathogens prior to performing related work.
Pay
$24.88 per hour.
Schedule
- Second shift schedules: 2:00 PM–10:30 PM, 3:00 PM–11:30 PM, or 4:00 PM–12:30 AM, with two consecutive days off per week.
- Full-time, regular position with 40 scheduled months per year and 12 scheduled hours per week (additional hours as needed).
Location
Hanover, NH (onsite only).
