About the Role
The Custodian assists the custodial staff in providing a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students and staff. This role involves performing a variety of custodial tasks, assisting with supervision and training of part-time or temporary custodial staff, and responding to office and staff requests.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily duties in assigned areas, including:
- Dusting all flat surfaces
- Emptying wastebaskets and pencil sharpeners
- Sweeping floors and straightening desks
- Mopping or spot mopping
- Cleaning and servicing restrooms
- Sweeping hallways, stairs, and landings
- Lowering the flag if necessary
- Cleaning gyms, locker rooms, and auditoriums
- Assisting with lunchroom cleanup
- Perform weekly duties, including:
- Buffing and high dusting
- Carpet spotting
- Replacing light bulbs
- Stripping, sealing, and waxing floors
- Washing walls
- Perform energy management functions as required
- Consult with the Building Custodial Supervisor regarding school activities and community use of the building
- Respond to office and staff requests, including setting up audio-visual equipment (TV, DVR, audio systems, SMART boards, iPads)
- Report building maintenance needs, supplies, and equipment needs to the Building Custodial Supervisor
- Secure the building by checking windows, doors, and lights before leaving; if on second shift, secure the entire building
- Remove marks from floors and graffiti from walls as needed
- Spray buff hard surface floors as requested
- Perform recycling-related duties as requested
- Respond to emergencies appropriately
- Assist with additional duties as assigned by a supervisor
Equipment Used
- Hand tools of the trade and related power equipment, including:
- Brooms, mops, and floor cleaning/waxing machines
- Vacuum cleaners
- Snow blowers and shovels
- Power mowers and hand tools
- Basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines
Must comply with guidelines for equipment use.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, or snow)
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents, contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
- Must meet the required level on the Physical Capacity Profile (PCP), including:
- Climbing stairs and/or ladders
- Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally
- Exerting 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently
- Exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly
- Ability to squat, bend, stoop, reach, push, and pull

- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to exchange information with internal and external stakeholders
- Effective communication with supervisors when discretion is needed

- Knowledge of asbestos information and mechanical operations
Interrelations
- Contact with district personnel, customers, and vendors
- Work under the direct supervision of the department supervisor to complete day-to-day tasks
- Work with a diverse population, handling all situations with tact and diplomacy
- Understand and respond appropriately to customer needs while maintaining a positive attitude
- Interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide responsive customer service
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Completion of Proficiency of Custodial Operations certificate preferred
