Custodial Supervisor
About the role
The role of the Custodial Supervisor is to lead and manage the operations of the District’s custodial staff and crossing guards (approximately 70 people).
Responsibilities
- Interviews, hires, counsels and terminates custodial staff and crossing guards as required, under the supervision of the Director of Facilities and the Human Resources Department.
- Captures, assigns and inspects the custodial work at all school buildings.
- Captures substitutes for custodial and guard coverage.
- Develops and implements custodial cleaning procedures and assesses efficiency.
- Serves as a resource for staff safety training.
- Serves on District Safety Committee.
- Provides cleaning “best Practices” training to staff.
- Ensures compliance with District, State, Local and Federal laws, rules and regulations.
- Responds, as required, to emergency alarm calls (burglar and fire), vandalism, snow and ice events and other events as needed.
- Supervises and or procures the cleaning supplies and equipment within the budget, with the approval of the Director of Facilities.
- Maintains all “Safety Data Sheets” on all cleaning supplies, and ensures they are current and distributed to each District building.
- Assists with the custodial supply bid process and vendor selection.
- Develops a gym floor refinishing schedule, and coordinates and oversees the work.
- Coordinates, supervises and assists with snow removal or ice treatment of District sidewalks as well as public walks around the buildings. May require off hours and weekends.
- Serves as a supervisor for the District crossing guards (five locations).
- Serves as a supervisor for custodial staff in making miscellaneous supply purchases, by either obtaining purchase orders or using a District credit card. Receipts are to be turned in promptly.
- Completes annual performance evaluations of all custodial and crossing guard staff.
- Manages the District’s solid waste and recycling services. (Reduce service in the summer and over long breaks to save money.)
- Appropriately maintains and secures any confidential records or information, and non-disclosure of such.
- Oversees, coordinates and assists with special projects and set-ups as assigned by the Director of Facilities, the Superintendent’s office, Community Relations Office, etc.
- Insures all timesheets are submitted promptly and accurately to the timekeeper, sign off as required.
- Maintains inventory records of all custodial equipment and supplies.
- Solves any and all conflicts in a timely, appropriate and professional manner.
- Suggests and implements changes in work practices for better quality and efficiency.
- Sends immediately any safety concerns to the Director of Facilities.
- Aids in energy conservation measures as directed.
- Once quarterly provides the Director of Facilities and the building Principal a detailed written inspection. Discusses with appropriate staff for improvement.
- Works closely with building Principals and Head Custodians regarding the custodial staffing (hiring, promoting, counseling or termination).
- Works closely with the Maintenance Supervisor; reports (daily) any issues or problems observed throughout the District.
Requirements
- High School diploma
- A minimum of five years custodial experience
- Progressive supervisory experience preferred
- Must be able to work independently
- Must have experience in the operation of a variety of custodial equipment
Skills
- Education and/or experience: High School diploma, a minimum of five years custodial experience, progressive supervisory experience preferred
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work well with others and follow oral and written instructions
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing, ability to read and interpret documents
- Computer Skills: Must be familiar or able to use the following District programs: GMAIL, Google Docs and Sheets, Talent ED, KRONOS, etc.
Qualifications
- Certificate, licenses, registrations: Must possess or obtain a Missouri Class E Drivers License and have a good driving record, Completion of the Certified Facility Manager program administered by the Mo School Plant Managers Assn.; preferred but not required, CPR/First Aid Certificate desirable
- Physical Requirements: Employee will be required to stand and walk continuously with some sitting, Must be able to lift 50 pounds, Employee frequently will walk on slippery surfaces, Employee will periodically work in below freezing temperatures and also above 80 degrees, Employee is frequently required to hear and speak and must have close - moderate distant vision ability, Employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. Occasionally may work with toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is usually moderate but can occasionally be loud, Must be able to multi-task and meet deadlines, Appropriate dress as approved by Director of Facilities
