Custodial Services Assistant
About the role
The Custodial Services Assistant assists the Custodial Services Supervisor in managing the Custodial Services Department. Duties include creating and maintaining inventory records, inspecting and maintaining custodial equipment, coordinating supplies and equipment, assisting with staff training, and performing various custodial tasks.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain the inventory records and locations of custodial supplies and equipment.
- Inspect, monitor, and maintain custodial equipment.
- Perform minor maintenance repairs and coordinate major repairs with vendors.
- Avoid and coordinate in staff training of equipment, cleaning methods, procedures, and regulations.
- Maintain various necessary operational records relating to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), keys, attendance, and related custodial functions.
- Coordinate, collect, and monitor campus biohazard waste and arrange for vendor disposal.
- Aid in the dissemination of supply, equipment, and procedures training information to staff.
- Keep a log of battery maintenance on equipment.
- Assist with the initial new employee training program.
- Aid the Information Technology department in installation, service, and software maintenance of custodial computers and equipment.
- Acquire, install, maintain, and service various types of storage and dispenser units.
- Maintain and monitor custodial setup furniture inventory and assigns storage locations.
- Interface with vendors, faculty, and staff on resolution of problems or concerns as directed.
- Perform custodial service and trouble calls for hygiene maintenance.
- Collect and deliver bulbs and batteries to be recycled for custodial services to support services buildings.
- Complete custodial staff laundry for first shift only.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- 1 year of custodial experience in industrial or commercial cleaning required.
- Must possess the ability to work independently and be self-motivated to complete tasks.
- Working knowledge of computers, internet, and electronic e-mail system required.
- Must possess the ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
- 5 years of experience is preferred.
Functional Requirements
- Ongoing physical access to departments and facilities throughout the University for extended periods.
- Frequent independent physical manipulation of loads of up to 20 pounds for extended periods.
- Occasional independent physical manipulation of loads of up to 50 pounds.
- Occasional physical manipulation of loads up to 100 pounds with the assistance of a co-worker.
- Continuous independent assessment of cleaning equipment and supply performance to identify defects.
- Ongoing receipt and accurate understanding of instructions and other communications provided by supervisors.
- Continuous independent assessment of cleaning equipment and supply performance to identify defects.
- Intermittent use of a ladder to reach heights from eight to twenty feet.
- Ongoing manipulation of small objects and hand tools for extended periods to perform cleaning tasks.
- Ability to use computers and computer systems (software and hardware) to set up functions, to enter data, to retrieve and process information and create documents.
- Ability to retrieve information from written documents and from computer-generated reports.
- Ability to present a positive demeanor while interacting and cooperating with University employees, students, and visitors, as well as external vendors.
- Continuous selective attention to assigned tasks for prolonged periods.
- Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements: Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Overtime may be required. Travel within the University and occasional travel to offsite University locations using an University vehicle is required.
