About the role

Custodian/Grounds/Plant Maintenance personnel perform custodial duties, including overall building, grounds maintenance, and repair functions under general supervision from an administrative superior.

Responsibilities

Day-to-day job duties are determined by the Lead Maintenance superior or his/her designee and may vary depending on the changing needs of the classroom(s), school(s), and/or school district. The Custodian/Grounds/Plant Maintenance personnel must comply with the duties outlined by their superior.

  • Report to the Custodian Lead who is responsible for the direction of janitorial services
  • Work cooperatively with others and/or work independently without supervision
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedures along with refilling restroom dispensers
  • Sweep, mop or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; clean, dust and wipe furniture
  • Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
  • Perform light maintenance duties (ex. replace light bulbs)
  • Use basic maintenance tools and machinery
  • Conduct a wide variety of ground maintenance to playgrounds, sports turf, fencing, paving, and snow removal
  • Notify the administration of any potential safety dangers on school grounds

Requirements

  • Pennsylvania Criminal Records check (Act 34) less than 5 years old
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance History (Act 151) less than 5 years old
  • FBI Criminal History Record (Act 114) less than 5 years old
  • Proof of a TB test or chest x-ray that is less than three months old
  • Proof of a high school diploma
  • Additional required STS documents will be provided during onboarding process
  • Proof of mandated training for Act 126 (Mandated Reporting) and/or Act 71 (Suicide Prevention), if applicable
  • Certificates for specialized training (i.e. Crisis Prevention Intervention), if applicable

  • Frequent physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials
  • Frequently lift or carry 25+ pounds
  • Manual dexterity to use various maintenance equipment
  • Ability to speak, read and write English proficiently
  • Vision (Near, Color, Depth Perception)
  • Sense of Sound (Ability to hear fire alarms, bells, and PA system)
  • Sense of Touch
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Work is performed in all areas of district buildings, grounds, vehicles, and/or anywhere on district property. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, is exposed to varying degrees of temperature, and may work in high, precarious places. The employee is also occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.
