About the role

Under general supervision, the Custodial Floor Technician cleans and maintains various types of floor surfaces and performs preventative maintenance on specialized floor equipment. May perform routine custodial duties and special project tasks. This position may be contacted during non-duty hours for emergencies.

Schedule

The work schedule is Tuesday – Saturday from 11:00pm to 7:30am, and may be modified according to need. After hours, weekend, or holiday work may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization
  • Perform all assigned tasks in a professional manner to reflect the highest integrity of the Custodial Services Department
  • Scrub, strip, wax and polish floors using heavy (industrial type) powered scrubber and buffers
  • Move heavy furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment as directed
  • Report items that need repair (doors, door checks, furniture lights, faucets, etc.)
  • Transport moderately heavy objects or equipment as required
  • Responsible for cleaning and servicing floor care equipment
  • Periodic dusting and sweeping of stairs
  • Clean and shine elevators
  • Utilize the appropriate chemicals and supplies according to procedures
  • Operate and maintain equipment correctly and safely
  • Observe safety precautions at all times
  • Sweep or shovel snow from steps and walks at building entrances and connecting walkways
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Tennessee Driver’s License
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude
  • Good oral and written communication skills, with the ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write correspondence such as letters and internal e-mail communications
  • Ability to utilize e-mail systems such as Outlook 365, including creating equipment status reports, cleaning supply requests, and maintaining schedules

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of floor care experience
  • Basic computer software skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel)

Skills

  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures
  • Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in custodial and minor maintenance work
  • Ability to follow simple instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, the public, and other employees
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly

Physical Demands / Working Conditions

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, reach with arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, and talk or hear
  • Must have the ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, and push or pull up to 250 pounds
