About the Role

Under direction, this position functions as a crew leader for custodial personnel engaged in highly responsible custodial tasks for an assigned school. The role ensures school personnel, students, and the public have an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place to work and conduct school activities. Responsibilities include daily unlocking and securing of facilities, routine inspection of facilities and grounds for hazardous conditions, and maintaining adequate supply inventories. The position oversees and participates in all facets of custodial work.

Responsibilities

• Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
• Plan and coordinate daily custodial tasks; delegate tasks to custodial personnel; monitor and inspect work for compliance.
• Provide training and instruction to custodial personnel, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards for chemical use and safety.
• Perform daily opening and securing of the assigned school facility, including unlocking doors, inspecting grounds, and managing lighting/security systems.
• Monitor materials inventory and supply levels; order new stock and coordinate equipment service/repair as needed.
• Operate electrical cleaning equipment (e.g., vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high-speed buffers) safely and effectively.
• Use appropriate chemicals and cleaners according to instructions and regulatory standards for safety.
• Perform custodial tasks such as emptying waste receptacles, washing windows, dusting furniture, and cleaning vents/fans.
• Sanitize restrooms, kitchens, food areas, and cafeterias.
• Perform physically demanding tasks, including mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors.
• Respond to emergencies (e.g., spills, broken windows, locks) to prevent hazardous conditions.
• Move furniture and equipment as needed.
• Maintain cleanliness of equipment, tools, and storage areas; report malfunctions and maintenance needs.
• Perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment (e.g., changing vacuum belts/bags, buffer pads).
• Assist in general facility maintenance (e.g., changing light bulbs, filling dispensers, setting up for meetings).
• Lead custodial crews in major projects (e.g., seasonal preparations, floor stripping/waxing).
• Stay updated on current technology used by OCPS; attend training to maintain required skill levels.
• Maintain timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Up to two years of successful custodial work experience with demonstrated leadership abilities, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must obtain Custodian certification from the Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) within one year of hire. OCPS provides training for this certification.
• New hires (as of March 19, 2007) must complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS).

• Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages).
• Functional Reasoning: Ability to apply principles of rational systems and interpret instructions in various formats (written, oral, diagrammatic).
• Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against measurable criteria.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Physical Ability: Tasks involve heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying objects (20–50 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds).
• Sensory Requirements: Ability to perceive and discriminate odors, depths, and visual details; oral communication may be required.
• Environmental Factors: Regular exposure to adverse conditions (e.g., strong odors, fumes, dust, humidity, temperature extremes, noise, machinery, vibrations, pathogens, toxic agents).
