About the Role

Under direction, this position functions as a crew leader for custodial personnel engaged in highly responsible custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. The role ensures school personnel, students, and the public have an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to work and conduct school activities. Responsibilities include daily unlocking and securing of facilities, routine inspection of facilities and grounds for hazardous conditions, and maintaining adequate supply inventories. The position oversees and participates in all facets of the assigned work.

Responsibilities

• Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
• Plans and coordinates daily custodial tasks; delegates tasks to custodial personnel; monitors and inspects work for compliance with assignments.
• Provides training and instruction to custodial personnel, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards for safe chemical use and application.
• Performs daily opening and securing of assigned school facility, including unlocking doors, inspecting grounds and facilities for hazards, and managing lighting and security systems.
• Monitors materials inventory and supply levels; orders new stock according to established policies; coordinates custodial equipment service and repair.
• Uses electrical cleaning equipment (e.g., vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high-speed buffers) and appropriate chemicals safely and productively.
• Performs custodial tasks such as emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, washing windows, dusting furniture, and cleaning vents and walls.
• Performs sanitizing tasks in restrooms, kitchens, food areas, and cafeterias.
• Performs physically demanding tasks, including mopping, stripping, waxing, and floor buffing.
• Responds to emergency situations to resolve or prevent hazardous conditions (e.g., spills, broken windows, broken locks).
• Moves furniture and equipment as part of duties.
• Maintains cleanliness of equipment, tools, and storage areas; reports malfunctions and facility maintenance needs.
• Performs routine maintenance on custodial equipment (e.g., changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, buffer machine pads).
• Assists in general facility maintenance, such as changing light bulbs, filling dispensers, and setting up for meetings/conferences.
• Leads custodial crews in major projects, such as seasonal facility preparations or floor stripping and waxing.
• Stays updated on current technology used by OCPS and attends training to maintain required skill levels.
• Maintains timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Up to two (2) years of successful custodial work experience with demonstrated leadership abilities, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must obtain Custodian certification from the Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) within one (1) year of hire. OCPS provides training for this certification.
• New hires (as of March 19, 2007) must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS).

• Functional Reasoning: Ability to apply principles of rational systems and interpret instructions in various forms (written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule).
• Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against measurable criteria.

Physical Demands

• Exerts heavy physical effort in heavy work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
• Lifts, carries, pushes, and/or pulls moderately heavy objects (20-50 pounds); may occasionally handle heavier objects (up to 100 pounds).
• Requires sensory abilities, including perceiving and discriminating odors, depths, and visual details.
• May require oral communication abilities.

Work Environment

• Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse conditions, such as strong odors, fumes, dust, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature extremes, noise, disease, pathogenic substances, and toxic/poisonous agents.
